escapism and psychedelics
    #14599137 - 06/12/11 01:39 AM (12 years, 8 months ago)

What is the relationship, in your opinion? Do psychedelics take you away from reality, or take you closer?
What's the relationship between escapism and psychedelics?
You may choose only one

Depends entirely upon how they're used. It also depends on which particular psychedelic is being used.

What do you mean by that? Which psychedelics encourage escapism and which discourage it? How would they be used to effect either outcome?

Well, some psychedelics can encourage escapism (depending on how they're used) in some individuals, and others can discourage escapism (depending on how they're used) in other individuals..there are many factors that influence whether a particular psychedelic will either discourage or encourage escapism.

If an individual uses a particular psychedelic for the purpose of escapism, it may help him/her in his/her efforts..likewise, if an individual uses a particular psychedelic for the purpose of going "closer to reality", it may help him/her in his/her efforts.

Due to the relative unpredictability of psychedelic experiences, I don't think it's safe to say that a certain psychedelic will definitely either bring one closer to reality, or take one away from it..again, there are many factors that influence this.

So do you think psychedelics are like wild cards?

I voted that psychedelics discourage escapism, period. That's been my experience. But I'm interested in other perspectives.

I think they're wild cards.  I think psychedelics set off neurons semi-randomly.  Different psychedelics set of neurons in different semi-random patterns.

I think ideally psychedelic experiences don't effect executive function, or effect it only mildly.  That way the user can pick out the valuable bits and pieces thats being randomly displayed.

Obviously its more complicated than this, but yeah i think its largely random and its up to individual users to interpret/use the experience how they see fit.

My trips seem slightly non-standard.  relatively devoid of the warm and squishiness that most people report.  So yeah i think its all about what you take out of it.

I mainly am curious because psychedelics had the apparent net effect of reducing my video-game playing and TV viewing from ~70 hours a week to ~7 hours a week, and of replacing those activities with nature hikes and obscure research. I could be wrong but this appears to be a drastic reduction of escapism in my life. DMT-smoking is, as T.M. said, an ultimately escapist pursuit, but it is one which lasts about half an hour and satisfies for weeks.

I'd say they take me toward reality, or toward truth.
But it also shows that reality does not reality exist.
psychedelics are transcendent and revealing.
What is this reality you speak of?

So drugs aren't escapism?

"We have invented reality. You have no way of experiencing reality at all except through the knowledge that society has put in you. There may not be any such thing as reality, let alone 'ultimate reality.' I do have to accept the fact that you are a man, that she is a woman. There it stops. What is this 'reality' you are talking about?" - UG Krishnamurti (paraphrased)

or as Sartre says-
“I confused things with their names: that is belief.”

No. Those words are meaningless and one dimensional. Expand your thinking good sir. Maybe try some psilocybin. :tongue2:

Drug abuse is escapism, most definitely. This is inherent in the term "abuse." Drug use, on the other hand, is therapeutic. Drug use saves lives.

Still, deciding who is escaping for what and by what means is quite premature. For all you know none of them exist, or they are all one being trying to forget itself, or it's nothing with no meaning. :nyan:
