WTF is this thing?
    #14597842 - 06/11/11 08:41 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Habitat:
This was growing on a pile of sand bags that was covered with oak leaves and a little dirt. US Gulf Coast region

Gills:
It doesn't really look like it has gills but whatever was under its cap was attached to the stem.

Stem:
about 3 1/2 inches

Cap:
It is round and curves up. It looks like the edges had been burnt or dried up somehow. It is yellow.

Spore print color:
I did not take a spore print. I did not want to touch this until I knew what it is.

Bruising:
Did not test.

Where abouts are you in the world Overstand?

It reminds me of Phlebopus/Phaeogyroporus sp. we get here a lot.

It's pretty rad whatever it is.

I'm in the US gulf coast area.

So if it is a Boletus species then it is possibly edible? Maybe even rather tasty?

Is it against the rules to offer free culture samples in the hunting and id section?

What baffles me is that my area has been experiencing a rather unusal drought. So much so that they may ban fireworks this 4th of July in my area. Because of this drought I have not even bothered checking any cattle fields for actives. Well, shit! If this thing can grow maybe there are some actives growing too? I think I may go hunting for actives soon.:strokebeard:

I went and picked it. Damn! This thing smells sweet! I am not going to taste it but I am guessing that if it is not toxic it would add a wonderful flavor to any dish. There was no blue bruising. I cut the cap and put it on aluminum foil with a bowl on top. Hopefully I can get a spore print.

I did a little reading on boletus. Everyone on Shroomery seems to agree that boletus are extremely difficult to cultivate because they only grow in conjunction with living trees. Well, the odd thing is that this one was growing in the crevice between two sand bags. It was not growing on anything living. There were no tree roots near it. It looked as though is was growing from some dirt that was in between the bags. There were some oak leaves around it but not in the mycelium. Is it possible that I found a cultivatable species of boletus?

There are saprobic Boletus species. I've seen a couple types of boletes growing out of and old tree stump. You likely have something you can cultivate, but don't know if it's even edible. I'd try to gnaw a piece off from a healthy part of cap and see if it's bitter. If it's bitter, it won't be any good to eat. I'd go back there and see if more pop up, healthy and then try to get a good ID.

In ancient times, when demons roamed with man, They hunted, loved and lost, hand in hand, As time went on, the difference between them faded. You couldn't tell anymore, demons and man were related, and some would say the same, but who would like to claim? In time, Gods had even forgot, Demons, too, once love had sought. In times recent I remember, Once I was a man, In my heart I had an ember, I'll relate the best I can but it was snuffed, one distant December. And yet here I stand, no flesh, no bones, no seed or semen, All that's left is this Demon.

A Boletus growing on a sand bag? A truly saprobic Bolete would be a pretty rare thing, and should help in the ID if it is a Boletus. Most all Boletes are mycorrhizal and grow with tree roots. Are there any roots growing through the sand bags? Any trees nearby?

Boletus zelleri has been found on stumps and is believed to be saprobic or the first mycorhizzal associate with Redwood (unlikely).

Kuo:

"Often growing under conifers, and sometimes under hardwoods. Presumably mycorrhizal, since it is a species of Boletus--but reported under redwood, sometimes growing from the very rotted wood around ancient trunks, by many authors (including this one). Since no mushrooms are known to be mycorrhizal with redwoods, one wonders. Growing alone, scattered, or gregariously; fall, winter, and spring; along the West Coast."

Why is it (unlikely)?

I imagine (but don't know) that they have probably scoured quite a few roots under the scope while looking for mycorhizzal associates. I'm not saying there aren't any, just that I'm sure there aren't any obvious ones. Also, they have been finding B. zelleri on decaying wood, which leans towards saprobic vs. mycorhizzal.

I just finished reading two articles that talk about the deeply mycorrhizal nature of redwood roots and how that has been a factor in limiting their range.

I've found truly lignicolous and parasitic boletes before...just saying it's rare.
