Moisture Content content too low in my WBS
    #14596524 - 06/11/11 03:11 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

After reading dozens of posts about peoples moisture content being to0 high, I took specials measure to avoid this problem.

Unfortunately there is one thing I faield to account for. I wasnt using a liquid culture or spore syringe. I did a "shroom to grain transfer", putting a small piece of tissue from a MASSIVE burmese yangoon into 4 quart jars. Without the water boost from an LC, its just too dry

They are growing, there is no contamination, but growth is horribly slow, almost 3 weeks after the transfer and all 4 jars have less than 25% colonization

I plan on injecting some water mixed with H2O2 to correct the issue.

Can someone give me an idea of

1. How much water should I add

2. What the proper ratio of water to H2O2 should be

3. Whether I should just rain the liquid over the top and let gravity bring it down or whether I should shake, (I dont want to hurt the mycelium)

As always any help it appreciated

why do you need to add H202?  It would just be harmful to the myc.

If you need to add water to correct the moisture content, I would inject whatever amount of LC you would normally use.

Spray the h20 over the surface of the grain, and shake gently so the water filters down but your not breaking up the myc network.

But honestly, I would just start over if I were you.  When it gets to the point of having to shoot more water, spore solution, w/e into your already-colonizing jars, shit usually doesnt end well.

ya, the h2o2 is a bad idea. i introduced it to a lc. knocked up 30 jars. 10 with 3cc's, 10 with 2cc's, and 10 with none as a control. the control jars are already done. the jars with 2cc's are almost ready to shake. and the 10 with 3cc's barley show a spec of white if any. i put a lot more lc in the 3cc jars, maybe something will come out of it. peroxide is not the solution. i have also been testing it with my casings, because i work in a moldy dirty basement. the h202 seems to be delaying pinning, and the pinset is real shitty. the other tubs look good. no contams or nothing. i use verm and coir anyway. i set a bunch of sopping wet coir in a trashbag wide open right on the dirty floor for three weeks and nothing grew on it. it just dried out eventually. peat based casings are good, but they are a higher risk of catching trich.
BACK TO THE SUBJECT. soak for 24 hours and boil for 10 to 12 minutes. not too dry, not too wet, and still room for lc (lots of it). i uasually let the seed set for 30 minutes in the strainer before i load the jars.

I have always read on this site that some h2o2 is beneficial because shrooms can break it down inti oxygen and water contaminants get killed. So should I just make new jars and transfer the colonized grain?

h202 slows everything down. it's like feeding yourself poison that won't kill you. squirt 5cc's water in the jar, shake it up and see if it grows back first, you might have some kind of contaminate in the jar. if that's the case it would be pointless to transfer.

I think do that with 2 jars and transfers with the other 2, diversify. I am confident there is no contamination, all I can see is white ropy mycelium
