Panaeolus cinctulus
    #14597327 - 06/11/11 06:39 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

Ok so I had seen I lawn with fresh sod and thought after the recent rains in my area I should check it out.  I pulled my car over got out and took a look.  I was quite thrilled when I saw a LOT of lil mushies:grin:I then went home grabbed a good mushroom picking bag and my camera and drove back to the house and knocked on the front door.  A man answered the door and I introduced myself as a hobby mushroom enthusiast and asked if he would mind if I took a few pictures of the mushrooms in his lawn and collected a few specimens.  He said sure and I went to work.  So here is the run down on what I found.

Habitat:Fresh sod

Gills:Black with gray fringes.  The gills seemed free (but I am not really sure if I know how to properly check this)

Stem: The stems ranged from a few inches long to the longest stem being about 6 inches.  most of them had noticeable strips winding from top to bottom.

Cap: The caps were very diverse, ranging from convex, to bell shaped, to wavy.  The smaller ones were maybe a quarter inch to the larger caps being around three to three and a half inches or so.  They all had a slimy feel to the touch.

Spore print color: They all printed jet black

Bruising:  I noticed what appeared to be mild blue color at the base of the bigger ones were were the mycelium was.  Allot of the smaller ones bruised red on the stems.

There are a lot of pics, but I didn't want to leave something out that might help to id these.

These first pics are of the lil guys fresh in the sod.

Now here's a pic of the whole take, and pics of them all laid out for printing.

And now some individual gooms.  This first one is a fatty. If you look at the pic with it in my hand where you can see the base of the stem you can see a tiny bit of blue.

And now some other pics of other mushies from the pick

If anyone needs to see more pics to confirm that these are Panaeolus cinctulus please just ask.  I have a lot more.  Thanks for taking the time to read this post and look through all these pics.

I did a spore print.  Each and every one of them printed jet black.   I live in Southern California (San Diego County).
