Raid on biggest mushroom drug operation in Wayne
#14596958 - 06/11/11 04:59 PM (12 years, 7 months ago) |
|
|
WOOSTER -- Five people were arrested and charged in connection with what is being called the largest psilocybin mushroom drug operation Wayne County has ever seen.
Operation Shroom Hunt on Monday included six search warrants at Wayne County locations, with one in Ashland County, and capped off a six-month investigation into the psilocybin mushroom operation.
Psilocybin mushrooms are a schedule one hallucinogenic drug.
A total of 57 baking pans of mushroom spores were seized. An additional 110 mason jars were seized with spores inside, along with 30-40 weapons and ammunition.
David Smith, director of Medway Drug Enforcement Agency, said if all of the spores were to be fully grown they would equal about 28 kilograms of finished product with a street value of nearly $150,000.
Justin R. Graham, 27, and Shannon M. Yeagley, 29, were arrested at 3669 East Sterling Road, Lot 8, their home in Canaan Township. Graham was charged with trafficking in crack cocaine and heroin. Yeagley was charged with trafficking in crack cocaine.
Brian K. Brown, 44, was arrested at his 7040 Cleveland Road residence in Wayne Township and was charged with cultivation in psilocybin mushrooms, a second-degree felony.
Brown's mother, Ilene M. Bennett, 68, was arrested and charged with cultivation of psilocybin mushrooms. Bennett was arrested at Brown's Cleveland Road residence as well.
Bert D. Underwood, 57, of 692 Greenwood Boulevard, Wooster, and owner of Bert's Jewelry, 2991 Cleveland Road, Wooster, also was arrested and charged with cultivation within 1,000 feet of a school, in this case Edgewood Middle School. The charge is a first-degree felony.
Search warrants were executed at Underwood's Greenwood Boulevard residence, a residence he owns at 5672 Force Road in Clinton Township, as well as his Cleveland Road business.
Smith noted Underwood allegedly was dealing the drugs from his business and an unknown amount of finished product was recovered there.
Additional search warrants were executed at 5455 Cleveland Road, a residence in Wayne Township, and at 2461 State Route 179, a Lakeville residence in connection with the operation.
Smith said Brown said during the operation he was the one who taught the other individuals the proper methods for cultivating the mushrooms.
Brown's mother is alleged to have helped him in the harvesting of the mushrooms, which, after they were grown, were diced up and put into various chocolates about the size of a hockey puck. About 3 grams of the hallucinogenic drug were placed in each chocolate, Smith noted.
"(Brown) said he was making about 30 pans a month at one time," for the past four years, Smith said.
Brown has a prior conviction distributing marijuana while serving in the United States Army.
Smith, along with Wooster Police Chief Steve Glick and Wayne County Sheriff Thomas Maurer, noted the bust has grabbed the attention of state and federal agents.
"This is one of the biggest mushroom busts in the state that I am aware of," as far as cultivating the drug, Smith noted.
Underwood was noted to be a major grower and distributor of the mushrooms, as well as supplying weapons. The 30-40 weapons seized belonged to Underwood. They included AK-47s, rifles, shotguns and pistols. He also had $1,000-$2,000 worth of ammunition. He has his conceal-carry permit and was known to always have a gun on his person.
The bulk of the mushroom pans collected were from Underwood's Greenwood Boulevard address. But pans also were recovered at Graham and Yeagley's East Sterling Road residence and Brown's Cleveland Road residence.
Jars of mushroom spores were collected from the East Sterling Road, Force Road and Greenwood Boulevard residences.
And weapons were seized from Brown's Wayne Township residence.
Smith noted further charges are pending against others involved in the operation. Additional charges are pending against the five arrested Monday.
Glick said the initial speculation is there is product flowing out of the region from the local growers.
"They've got to be getting it out (of the region) ... it's just so much and we would hear about it on the streets," the police chief said. "I can tell you there is a market in the county and Wooster" for these drugs.
"This is an absolute acknowledgment of illegal drug activity in our community," Maurer noted in what he called a "drug culture" in the area. "I firmly believe if it was not for Medway and its members, this may have gone under the scope of knowledge to be stopped."
And all three law enforcement officials noted it was street level intelligence and surveillance that led to the arrests and the seizure of evidence.
"Look for any activity outside the norm," Glick noted. "It may turn out to be nothing, or it may turn into something like this."
Smith added short-term traffic, especially at odd hours, is the biggest tip to possible drug activity.
About 50 agents took part in Operation Shroom Hunt from Medway, the Bureau of Criminal Identification & Investigation, Drug Enforcement Agency, Wayne and Ashland sheriff's offices and officers from Wooster, Orrville, Rittman, Brunswick, Creston, Smithville, Doylestown, Shreve and Millersburg police departments.

"A total of 57 baking pans of mushroom spores were seized." that would be trillions of spores.

Dont blame the news for not knowing how to grow the mushrooms. We all have our own field of expertise and interest. In this example there job was to give us the information that was provided to them by the police (who probably also don't understand exactly how to grow the mushrooms but have a pretty good idea.)

Doc, there were definitely spores in the jars and pans, but, there were not JUST spores in the pan, as the article makes it out to be.
There was probably spawn and spores, yes, but not just spores. That's what he's saying. It wasn't JUST spores. Re-read it and if you still don't follow, re-read it again. You're super confused bro

Well if the police stick to there story and keep calling them spores maybe they can have all the mushroom evidence thrown out because spores alone are not illegal. Regardless there still fucked.

and how would law enforcement go about enforcing that if they don't even know the diff between spores and growing mycelium? sure it would fuck up the mail order business, but only nOObs buy spores anyways, so it would make it more underground and harder to enforce.

Damn, these cops REALLY dont know anything about what their saying, do they? ~50mason jars of spores could grow 28kg of mushrooms??? Id say reality is closer to 1 sporeprint could EASILY do the same... If one make LCs from them one could probably make 1000 litres of LC from a good print, considering the very small ammount of spores needed for 1l LC. 1000litres/8cc=125.000 inoculations. Multiply this with at least 5g dry on average pr (0,5l/pint) jar/inoculation=625kg dry mushrooms pr print. Not to mention how much this would get if you made a 2nd, or 3rd generation LC...
If this is how they treat growers - charge people with how much spores they got - i guess most of us would be sentenced to life in prison, with accusations of planning to grow tons of mushrooms from our sporeprints. Yeah, we´re the big guys allright! Sex, Drugs & Rocknroll! And im just loaded with money from all the mushrooms i grow and sell to all the kids nearby. I live pretty close to both a kindergarden, and a kids-school. Life is great! Stupid cops!
Maybe it was LC and not spores in those jars. I suppose all big growers use LCs, and store it in things like mason jars. And if it was 50 quart mason jars with LC this could be closer to reality with how much they could grow from it.

This article was written by a journalist who probably got his info from the LOCAL police force. Local police are not the ones banning substances and creating new laws(not the ones we are talking about at least). It is the higher powers that are the culprits of this stupid war on drugs. I am sure that they know much more than average cop.

The "baking pans of mushroom spores" line got me rolling too! That's some funny shit! That would be similar to saying "Today officers recovered three 100 gallon planter pots full of Pot seeds growing what appeared to be marijuana". . . .

i'm sure it was the black market guns that lead them to the grower. i doubt he was "protecting his grow" more just blowing his cash on guns because he liked guns. if the guns were bought legally he still sent up a red flag on himself by spending so much money on guns. the ATF would wonder why someone is buying so many, and where they are getting the money from.

I know countless people in ohio who own guns and no one knows unless they tell them. You don't have to register a gun in ohio.....it can go through 10 different hands and the atf would have no clue.

Shroom bust people plead not guilty July 6, 2011 - daily-record.com
WOOSTER -- Six people pleaded not guilty to charges in connection with a psilocybin mushroom drug operation in Wayne County.
The charges stem from Operation Shroom Hunt on June 6 that capped off a six-month investigation.
Psilocybin mushrooms are a schedule one hallucinogenic drug.
A total of 57 baking pans of mushroom spores were seized. An additional 110 mason jars were seized with spores inside, along with 30-40 weapons and ammunition.
David Smith, director of Medway Drug Enforcement Agency, previously said if all of the spores were to be fully grown they would equal about 28 kilograms of finished product with a street value of nearly $150,000.
Charged in Wayne County Common Pleas Court and who pleaded not guilty are:
Brian K. Brown, 43, of 7040 Cleveland Road, Wooster, who pleaded not guilty to five counts of trafficking in psilocybin, one count of trafficking in oxycodone, two counts of trafficking in counterfeit controlled substances and seven counts of illegal manufacture or cultivation of drugs in psilocybin. The charges stem from incidents on March 7, 8, 9, 16, 18, 22 and 29, April 13, 21 and 30, May 17 and June 6. If convicted, Brown faces a maximum of 77 years in prison.
Brown's mother, Ilene Bennett, 68, of 7040 Cleveland Road, Wooster, who pleaded not guilty to illegal manufacture or cultivation of drugs in psilocybin and permitting drug abuse. The charges stem from April 21 and June 6. If convicted, Bennett faces a maximum of nine years in prison.
Brown's father, Harry Bennett, 67, of 7040 Cleveland Road, Wooster, who pleaded not guilty to permitting drug abuse. The charge stems from June 6. If convicted, Bennett faces a maximum of one year in prison.
Justin R. Graham, 28, of 104 E. Church St., Perrysville, who pleaded not guilty to two counts of trafficking in oxycodone, one count of trafficking in cocaine, one count of trafficking in heroin, one count of trafficking in psilocybin and one count of illegal manufacture or cultivation of drugs of psilocybin, with a juvenile specification. The charges stem from incidents on March 8, 10 and 30, May 3 and June 6. If convicted, Graham faces a maximum of 6 years in prison.
Shannon Yeagley, 29, of 104 E. Church St., Perrysville, who pleaded not guilty to one count of trafficking in cocaine, one count of permitting drug abuse and one count of illegal manufacture or cultivation of drugs in psilocybin, with a juvenile specification. The charges stem from incidents on March 10, May 3 and June 6. If convicted, Yeagley faces a maximum of 10 years in prison.
Bert D. Underwood, 57, of 692 Greenwood Boulevard, Wooster, and owner of Bert's Jewelry, 2991 Cleveland Road, Wooster, who pleaded not guilty to five counts of trafficking in psilocybin and three counts of illegal manufacture or cultivation of drugs in psilocybin within 1,000 feet of a school, in this case Edgewood Middle School. The charges stem from incidents March 23 and 31, April 15, 21 and 28, May 5 and June 6. If convicted, Underwood faces a maximum of 49 years in prison.
Smith noted Underwood allegedly was dealing the drugs from his business and an unknown amount of finished product was recovered there. He is known to be a major grower and distributor of the mushrooms, as well as supplying weapons, Smith said. There were 30-40 weapons seized, which belonged to Underwood.
They included AK-47s, rifles, shotguns and pistols. He also had $1,000-$2,000 worth of ammunition. He has a conceal-carry permit and was known to always have a gun on his person, Smith said.
Ilene Bennett is alleged to have helped her son, Brian Brown, in the harvesting of the mushrooms, which after they were grown were diced up and put into various chocolates about the size of a hockey puck. About 3 grams of the hallucinogenic drug were placed in each chocolate, Smith said.
Weapons also were seized from Brown's residence.
There are charges pending against others involved in the operation.

I just so happened to stumble across two of those bastards myself. I put them away for another day.
