Reishi Mycelium or Not? *updated-- Reishi Grow Log*
    #14596420 - 06/11/11 02:40 PM (14 years, 3 months ago)

Hello all. This is my first grow. inoculated Reishi LC to rye grain 2 days ago. Today, I see this in all my jars:

It is thin and wispy, and not as white as my Reishi on agar. I can see many tiny spidery strands creeping onto the sides of the glass, from the colonized grain.

The agar (Grocery Store Agar Tek) that I inoculated at the same time (2 days ago) with the same Reishi LC, is already showing very thick, bright white, velvety mycelium. That's why these jars are worrying me, the myc looks nothing like the Reishi on agar!

Could someone chime in on whether this stuff in my jars is indeed Reishi that hasn't thickened up yet... or something horrendous like cobweb? Thank you.

A lot of species (if not all) have a thin and whispy stage, and a consolidation stage. I believe in grain you can more clearly see the thin and whispy stage because it has a lot more ground to cover throughout a 3d media. But yes, that looks like reishi myc to me.

Thanks for the input! Makes me feel better, though I will be keeping a close eye on it. I believe if it starts to go aerial in the air space above the grains, it is 100% cobweb right?

If it truly is reishi myc, then I am blown away by how fast it is. None of the other mushroom species I am attempting even come close!

Mine look exactly like yours too,  I originally thought it was cobweb too but some of the spots in my jars turned snow white, so my guess is it's myc.  I'm still a noob though so only take it for face value.

It's growing, not at the speed of light but definitely noticeably within 24 hours. It is nowhere near brilliant white-- it is actually a shade grayer than the pictures show. It is also somewhat reaching out into the air in a thin puffy way. No distinct smell. No distinct condensation. It is in all four reishi jars, but not in the reishi agar, nor any other grain jars.

Am I just being paranoid? Is this reishi mycelium or something foul?

If it is reishi, what makes it look so different from the reishi on agar?

Dude this is exactly whats going on with my reishis.  I personally wanna say your safe. This is why:
I inoculated 11 rye jars; 3 shitake, 8 reishi.  Both were inocd with 1 10 ml syringe each.  That means the reishi got an eighth of a 10ml syringe
3-4 days later I got the supposed "cobweb" in all the jars that you see in your jars.  I thought it was cobweb but decided to keep the jars just in case.    Then a day or two later, I noticed that the shitake jars had becomee much more white, and another day it was forsure snow white myc.  Now my reishi's are still in the "light gray stage" but I think that's because alot less lc was inoculated into the reishi jars then the shitake jars.

My opinion is, if you wait, you'll have a great white surprise!

Hmm now that you mention volume of LC... my reishi jars were the only ones I shook after noccing, thus the myc started off already spread thin I guess?

Guess it's time to just wait it out... thanks!

Yeah, I  shook mine also.  I honestly think we'll be fine.
Keep updating!

Ok so small update:
Guess it's not cobweb after all!
Jars reached 75-90% colonization still looking grey, fuzzy, and spidery.
Gave em a good shake,, and now a day later they're almost fully recovered and turning white! Wheee.
Agar jar reached 100% few days ago, but I don't have anything to transfer into, so it goes in the fridge for now. Double-bagged in ziplock, plus a brown paper bag for style.
Time to run some newspaper and cardboard thru the shredder!

Nevermind. I just read your description and then looked at the pic from 2 days ago. Looking good!

Hopefully this bad news doesn't apply to you, mine went through the same stage yours are now going through, and ended purple spots appeared a few days later :frown:.
I'm sorry but our jars have been virtually identical in growth, and the fact that they both colonized in such a strange manner, and went through the same stages, it looks a bit grim.  But good vibes and I hope it's just me!!
Let us know

Update
Okay we may be fine, the above only happened in my shitake jars, hopefully it doesn't in my reishis.  I'll keep you updated.

Update: 3 of 4 jars fully colonized? (Day 9 since innoc)

Everything is bright white now and very thick. So thick that the myc is climbing up the sides of the jar, eating at small bits of rye that got stuck to the walls during the shake.

No funny smells, and tiny bit of condensation in one jar. All my other jars of various things display no contams. They're all going slow as fuck though, with the exception of this reishi.

Look ok? Spawn soon? I'll prob be spawning to newspaper and cardboard in homemade spawn bags.

Good job!
My reishi's are just about fully colonized, i'm gonna give em a couple more days before I spawn to substrate.

How were you planning on fruiting?

I would spawn reishi sooner rather than later.  It pretty quickly turns solid and is hard to get out of the jar politely.

Probably open the bag to fruit, in a martha. Been reading about the spore load with conks, so I'm aiming for antlers instead! Plus, antlers look amazing.

Glad you mentioned this. I don't wanna have to resort to more than vigorous coaxing.

Yesterday: Bulk Sub Prep
Tore up my thumbs shredding cardboard.
Fired up the amazing cross-cut shredder for newspaper.
Soaked both in dilute coffee solution.
(Newspaper:cardboard approx 1:1, enough to fill a 2.5 gallon bucket to the brim)

Then realized I should've used coffee solution with the pasteurization water when I dumped boiling water into my bucket to pasteurize. Well, live and learn.

Positioned meat thermometer in the sub soup, covered bucket lid, and wrapped the whole contraption in 2 puffy winter coats.

Temp dropped to 150F and stabilized there for 2 hours.
Have a feeling it could've held longer, but I figured 2 hrs is enough.
Removed puffy winter coats to allow the soup to cool overnight.

Today (Day 11 from innoc): The Big Event! Spawning to Bulk.
Strained the whole mess in a 5 gallon paint strainer, squeezing as much water out as I could.

Loaded up the cardboard-newspaper mix into four separate 16"x17.5" turkey oven bags, making sure to squeeze more water out of it.
(Remember reading that reishi likes a less-than-field-capacity sub.)
Also fluffed up the mixture as I went along.

Got my fully colonized jars and spooned out the grain spawn, mixing it thoroughly through the sub. The outside of the myc layer had formed a latex-y skin, fun!

The whole thing smelled... I guess you could call it "mushroomy". Fresh. But also slightly metallic. (Like a girl's hoo-ha. A very clean one. Does anyone else notice this? Or is it just me?)

After all the spawn was spawned, I attached 1" PVC collars to the oven bags and stuffed that with polyfill, for GE during colonization of the bags.

Here is an example of my end result:

Does it matter at all that the top of the oven bag flops over like that?? I know this doesn't happen with proper filter patch bags. Will it impede my GE in any way?
