Dont use the decomposing grain.  Use a mixture of milo, millet, wheat kernels.  Or just plain rye kernels are the best

Ditch the millet. Milo + wheat kernels + a very small amount of sunflower seeds...

but rye berries are the best.

If it's anything other than "rye grass seed", like for lawns, get it.

Avoid corn. Works ok, but there are much better choices.
Really I think the rye is going to be the one magic item.

If you are planning on doing an indoor grow you don't want the decomposing grain. It contains tons of baceria, mold, and possibly insects. Too much to worry about when sterilizing it. Mother nature regulates that when mushrooms grow naturally. I would imagine some of the nutrients have already been lost to decomposition.

If you are thinking of growing directly on the pile I don't know how well it would work. With all that grain in the open air moisture loss will be a big problem and probably the reason they aren't growing on it now. You could case it with vermiculite or even just soil to help with that. It may get noticed and get you in trouble though.

if you use the decomposing grain, keep it at work, and take spores to it :crazy2:

metall could you put up an exact list of what seed you have at the mill?

Wheat berries will work. You don't want grass seed.

I find the best WBS in Canada is wal mart's store brand great value.  Milo, millet, wheat and sunflower.  Its $13 for 16KG.
