It's about a 1 hour drive to get to the paddocks I pick cubes in. Have to go at night too because its so close to a farmers house. Its nice though. Some evenings we would arive around 1am and it would be so thick with fog that you couldn't see 10m in front of you. Spend maybe 3 hours picking a 100m x 100m field and head home.

Picking at night is fun.

I always wondered about picking at night... doesn't the torch or whatever show you up and make you look like a burglar or cattle rustler or something?

Had a freaky experience at our local sacred spot last season when out of light and trying to squeeze in an end of season pick, all manner of spooky heebie jeebie goings on in the mist soon had us abandoning the mission! -Don't fancy trying that again any time soon :uhoh:

As for the travelling, in a motor I'd usually venture one and a half hours away, though lucky in a way that work takes me all over so if get done in good time can hot foot it to promising looking spots local to position.

A five hour trek with the fuel prices over here would need nearly a weeks wages for some!

When I was living out of town (where I live now) for 6 months I found myself driving 3 hours north every other week to go hunting (and to see my girlfriend) but if there was no girlfriend in the picture I would have done it anyway

Typically I'll make daily trips of up to an hour during the grow season with the occasional long stretch of 2 hours to get to my fav. C. Cornucopioides spots.

We use a dim lantern or iPhones if needed but you can usually see pretty well with the moonlight if its a clear night. It works.

Only time we've had to leg it was when the farmer was coming home at 3am and stopped out side the entrance to the field. My stomach dropped. We had to wade through a swamp bit to get to the far fence which is electrified and shimmy under. We made it out with out being caught. Soo close though.

Thats some sketchy shit man:wow::shocked:

Glad you made it out and live today:thumbup:

Only cube/pan cyan hunting ive done was in Houston TX off of crazy bum-fuck dirt roads - - - - -i would NOT go there in the dark:eek::eek: Longhorn steer will KILL YOU - THE FARMERS WILL SHOOT YOU - CRAZY water moccasins will BITE you - and man its a blessing when we actually made it out 3 times without any fuss and we actually had decent hauls - - -- - - - - - - - - still sketchy as hell - we had a farmers nephew chase us down on a 4wheeler - all he wanted was a handfull of the cubies we had tho -- wheewwwww --- and one time as we pulled away in my rental car - a crazy scary looking tow truck was RIGHT down the road heading pretty much FOR MY RENTAL:eek::eek::eek:
We'd of been FUCKED if our ride got towed - - - - - -- - - the dude who found the fields we went to in Houston also said he found two women's bodies ( dead n dresses )HOLY:shocked:
It is fun - but really not worth the risks
We found other public parks that had cubes and pan cyans after 3 trips to that field

Stay safe fellas - a couple shroom trips aint worth dying for:thumbup:
Happy Hunting:cheers:

Without wanting to derail from the original question too much I think us hunters in the UK have it easy with regards to the obstacles and pitfalls we face.

An angry farmer/ shepherd is about the most of it for us but our friends down under face deadly snakes and spiders, Eastern US Ovoid hunters face ticks, mosquitos and snakes....

Then there are the sketchy murderous characters out in the wilderness that Wiscokid alludes to!

Anybody encountered a Grizzly Bear on a hunt or anything else of note!?

Spooky.. can you expand on that? Did you see Will 'o' the wisps ?

Copy the URL as it links wrong......

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Will-o'-the-wisp

I bet it was spine tingling, I would imagine it would be great looking under moonlight I defo might consider it but it has it's spooky drawbacks it seems.....

I get spooked hearing bird calls and other animal sounds in the morning mist as well.

It's cool we can drift around a bit off topic etc. I am easy as long as mods are cool. I dislike it when I find a really good looking spot on online, sheep, sedge grass, beautiful stream/small river flowing at one end of field, perfect looking place... and then you see many small used buildings nearby making it likely to look pretty odd being a sole dude wandering in the fields.  : (

Know that feeling.
It gets that way with cyan hunting too-
to many cars, people, public buildings and houses
Not to mention cctv and the police
I wouldnt be surprised if somebody ends up
getting lifted this season.

I'm considering driving 2+ hours, to wherever the rain has been falling, because it sure hasn't been falling here.

Still, there could be 20pct less police on the streets due to the cutbacks, hopefully the police will be justifying their existence by catching violent nutters instead of "collaring" peaceful dudes in anoraks walking in the nature. Though the sheep thefts and farm machinery thefts in the UK is a concern for nature walkers.

I have decided some 1.5 hours there and 1.5 hours back journeys are on the cards this year.

Ooh I totally missed this thread.  My travel time varies a lot my closest hunting ground is about 10mins away.  The furthest is about 1.5 hours.  I usually try to spend the entire day on hunts sometimes this is limited for some reason or another.

I will probably travel further in the future, I am pretty lucky with my local though, as there is endless bushland/forest around me.  I am contemplating a Mexico mushroom hunting trip next year as I have a mate that will be living over there.  :woot:
