Has Anyone Made Their Own Rooting Gel Preparations?
    #14595077 - 06/11/11 09:26 AM (12 years, 7 months ago)

I have some cuttings I want to root, but I only have rooting powder. Could I use this to make a gel of some sort? I have both gelatin and agar.

You can dilute powders in water, there's teks online but powder is fine. It's all I use on my cuttings. The trick with powders is not to have it caking around the fresh cut. Less is more when using powders.

Dip your cutting in the powder and remove, then use your finger to flick the stem, this should remove the excess powder and leave you with just the right amount.

I've never seen gel rooting compound.  Always used the powder myself.

When I saw the thread title I thought you were talking about making gelatin cubes to root the cuttings in.

I've had some success starting seeds and cuttings in gelatin.

Just buy a pack of clear gelatin (don't want the sugar in Jell-O)
Mix it up following the directions, pour into ice cube trays or whatever size/shape you want, once cool and partially set up just stick a cutting or a seed in the center of each jell-o cube.

Holds moisture for several days,  very gentle on the roots,  Breaks downs easily when planted in soil.
