Question about fruiting chamber
    #14578418 - 06/08/11 06:32 AM (12 years, 8 months ago)

I'm in the process of picking a see-thru plastic container for a fruiting chamber.  Does it matter whether the container is "food safe" or not?  And would anyone recommend any brand or general place to pick one up?

In the past I've used copious amounts of isopropyl alcohol to clean things.  Is it better to use Lysol?

Food Grade and cleanliness have nothing to do with eachother, seriously!... Food Grade plastic is more stable and is less susceptible to distillation...

I wouldn't worry about it too much for growing mushrooms... But then again, ignorance is bliss

My only concern was whether a container not being "food grade" would allow harmful chemicals to enter into my developing mushrooms (since they are a food) and would make them harmful to eat.  If that is not a concern, that makes the process easier.

Except for heavy metals, not a concern with tubs, you should be fine... Keep in mind that they use mushrooms (oysters) to clean up oil spills and toxic waste sites/spills

Your mushrooms are not in contact with the container, nor do you put it in the microwave, so food grade doesn't matter.

Get a clear tub that will admit plenty of light from all sides.  Your local hardware or home improvement center should have a good selection.

Thanks for the clarification on the Food Grade question.  I checked my local hardware store and while they have a good selection of containers, none of the tops are see-thru.  I was thinking of looking at Bed, Bath and Beyond and perhaps a Container store (although I've heard those can be expensive).  Would the Home Depot be a better choice?

When working with an opaque lid, it is common practise to cut out the middle and affix a clear material (such as plexiglass) to the top of it. For a "stealth" grow, said method can be used with a completely opaque container.

Cheers

Walmart or K-mart would be better.

Seems from this thread that finding a tub with a see-thru lid may be very hard.  Could I find one at K-mart? Can complete ones be found or does everyone use some other material to make a see-thru lid?

clear lid is not needed.

light from the side actually allows you to get your light closer to the actual substrate

That's where I get all my tubs.

Okay...so set it up so the grow lamp/sunlight is shining at an angle than hits the cakes from the side.  Its not a problem that it could miss the top of the cakes?

RR advised me that light from the side was superior to light from the top.
