Problems with my flow hood
    #14567894 - 06/06/11 03:21 AM (12 years, 8 months ago)

I've been lucky enough to have scored a free flow hood a few years ago, and it has served me well. But lately the motor has struggled to get going. The machine hums until it gets spinning, but now it takes 20 minutes to fire up, and even then its not performing like it used to.
I've taken the covers off, and tried to blow any dust off the motor with a hair dryer, but it's still not working.
Could it be a transformer, or something like this?

Are these electric motors easy to service?
Any ideas appreciated.

You could try to replace the capacitor, but from my experience in hvac systems, if the capacitor is bad, the blower won't even fire up. It's like a $12 part anyway, so it's worth a try if you want, but I'm thinking the motor itself is fubar. Make sure it is a 8uf capacitor. Try your local home depot or hvac supply.

Replace the blower. Simples!

Try the capacitor first.  Some capacitor start motors have a centrifugal switch on the back, and often these contacts get dirty or the weights get jammed.  You might have to take the back cover and bearing support off to get to the switch to clean it up.  If it doesn't stink of burning insulation, your motor is probably still OK.

Thanks heaps. I think the motor should be fine-no smells. Are there any special precautions I should take when removing the capacitor?
Can I use a screwdriver to discharge it, after I've disconnected the wires but while it's still attached to the motor? Or should I try and remove it then discharge it?

You won't need to discharge it.  It will bleed down on its own after a few seconds.  It's not a high voltage unit such as in old cathode ray TV sets.

Thanks again. I've ordered a new capacitor-much smaller than the original, but similar specs.

I guess a bonus is I've found some holes after the pre-filter, which I can now patch up. Big one near where the electric cable enters the unit. Guess that's where the spider and flies made their way in.

Well the new capacitor didn't fix it. Still humms and spins slightly.
I guess I'll have to pull the motor out somehow. I'll try and find the centrifugal switch and weights.

That looks like a Nema 56 frame motor from what I can see in the picture.  If so, you should be able to get a replacement fairly cheap at any heat and air shop or from grainers.  I'd get one without capacitor start.

Thought that might be the case. Ah, well it was worth a try.

Well I took it out, dismantled it, and realised I'm probably not qualified to repair an induction motor. I tried regardless. Putting it back together I wondered if I wasn't a bit rough. I haven't re-attached it to the fan yet, still waiting on a quote for a new motor. The first sounded too good...45 98. Wow $45.98...no, $4598!! Quote 2 $315 plus $25 postage.
Is there a special skill or tool for re balancing these fans, or do you just line them up?
Apparently I'll have to get the new axle cut down to size.

Is it worth trying to reverse flush my HEPA filter while the fans off? Would I vacuum from behind, or blow air from the front?

Don't mess with your HEPA filter or you'll screw it up.  Take a picture of the data plate and I'll find a motor for you.

Thanks RR, very helpful. But I live in Oz...postage might be a killer.

The original had the following stamped on it FBS 721RB, 240VAC 50Hz, 1Ph 2.0A Watts Out 475 Duty AOM 675.

I've ordered a new Fasco 290-425W 4P3sp double shaft, $341 delivered. I hope it fits. Apparently I'll have to hacksaw down the shaft to size.

That's way too much money to spend.  I'm sure an old washing machine motor or home heat or AC motor could be adapted easily.  I'll bet you could have found a motor for free.  Don't saw the shaft off any new motor.  It can screw up the balance, making it self-destruct and you'll have no warranty.

Yeah...I panicked.
I've been asked to deliver some courses at a community centre, and they start in 2weeks, and I want to bring the flow hood with me. I should've just built a new glove box until I found a new motor. But I don't want to go back to a glove box...you know what I mean if you've had a hood.., and I want to give heaps of cultured plates away. I poured heaps of plates before it died.
My brother in law, who is a navy electrician advised me to get a new motor-he estimated a few hundred, so I just jumped. I had hoped he'ld fix the old one...
And the sales man told me to get a $15 hacksaw...
I was going to give the flow hood away in a few months if I get a job I've applied for in the desert.
Would a kitchen range hood motor be strong enough for a 2ftx2ft HEPA?
And PM with a quote for some more DVDs Roger.

Take the motor to whatever shop works on heat and air conditioning units in your town. I'll bet they'll have an old unit out back with a motor that can be adapted to work, if not the exact thing.  You might also check with your local shop that repairs washing machines and clothes dryers.  Often, something other than the motor fails, and they replace the whole unit.  Most appliance shops have what they refer to as a 'bone yard' where they pile that stuff up to cannibalize parts from when needed.

I spent $30 on my used furnace blower for use in my flow hood. I could have gotten one for cheaper if not free had I shopped around a little more, and visited more heating and cooling places.

Well the new one arrived-I went to pick it up, and watched as the delivery guy picked up the box, clearly marked FRAGILE, and dropped it onto the floor!
Got it home, had to hacksaw both ends of the shaft, put it in and...wow, I think I was using it as a glove box before, it blows a gale now.
I cleaned the fan blades, which where caked in gunk-had to scrub them with a toothbrush.
Thanks for the help, next time I find a motor, I'm going to try and make a flow hood.

A lot of these motors will have a small hole for oil. I like to use the 3 in 1 electric motor oil. I don't own a flow hood but i have worked with plenty of these. Some have oil holes some don't. A little lube can prolong the life if so.
