Spirituality takes dedication and loyalty IMHO.
Most people aren't dedicated

I think it's the result of the breakdown of  Christianity.  That god was/is dying and not good as a shield from death anxiety anymore. so he had to morph into something more encompassing like a new age belief that everything is god and god is all love.  While these beliefs have been around for a long time on the fringe but have moved into the mainstream.

I don't really know what it is..everyone seems to have their own idiosyncratic interpretation of what it is.

Does this prevent you from answering the question, though?

I totally agree..that pretty much wraps the thread up.

I think people need a framework to put their experiences into. The contemporary Western materialistic framework is not sufficient for meditators and others who have "mystical", for lack of a better word, experiences. So people end up looking to the wisdom traditions which have survived history, to New Age channels and other places to put their experiences in perspective.

I think for a lot of people it starts out as an obscure interest, until results are achieved through practice. Others are thrown into strange situations and seek out ways to understand it.

I believe we are living in exciting times where, out of necessity, people will become more aware of higher aspects of themselves.

And Spirituality is just a word.

I think it has more to do with ignorance regarding the materialistic frameworks..most mystically-inclined individuals I've interacted with here at the Shroomery don't seem to know shit about science.

I think these traditions quell their anxieties, and this is what makes them gravitate towards them..they then try to fit their experiences within the framework of their favorite anxiety-quelling traditions/beliefs.

What kind of results are you speaking of?

Why is it necessary in these times IYO for people to become more aware of higher aspects of themselves? Which higher aspects are you referring to? Why is it exciting to you that people are becoming more aware (if, in fact, they are)?

It may have taken different forms but if anything has lasted throughout mans history it is spirituality because man can ask the question of what existence is/who am i? Which is the most enduring question we can ask.

Bar sex & food everything else has been a fad

It is sad that Western people reject christianity when they stumble upon articles regarding 2012 and the `spiritual evolution` that meant to happen this year and so on.

Actually, when we,say we because I am a westerner too and I have gone through this since I was  8 years old, read the surface of other religions, especially when we have a underlieing rejection of our current religious orientation,we tend to just see the results, the good things. Like when we think of hinduism,we just think about liberation, levitation, achieving a godstate and unity,or when we think of natives we just think that yea they are shamans they work with the spirit world they are cool.

Indeed there is such a rising number of the people intrested in other religious or esoteric practics. But this has been going on since a long time here,in the western civilisation.Yet the occult subject was only studied by advanced scolars, who had studied psychology and religion in-depth before, not by the average internet-surfing guy who finds a article about meditation or occultism practices.

It is not a game to be played by everyone, there is the risk of delusion. However, living in love and devotion to God and the world is a practice for everyone.

It`s good because there will be less lockedminded people,it is bad because many of those who choose the spiritual path end up in just another illusion.

Also,if you like meditation and occult practices, why not study gnosticism.Christianity has it`s occult side, just like every single religion in the world.

I tend to think religion just fills the void that moving away from tribal life left within humanity. Most people just want to be part of something. It's like football, but your children get molested if you pick the wrong team.

But don't you think many tribal people had their own religions?

Yes, though I think it was likely far different. It seems to me that religion expanded to fill in all the gaps left behind when people stopped living in such an interdependent way.

Yes, in a lot of cases particularly with young people it is. They dabble in it, never really doing much more but acting like they are master gurus or something.

I think spirituality has a lot do about the mainstream media.

My premise is that the mind cannot tell the difference from what it see's on TV to what it see's in real life 100%

There is essentially a part of our brain that does not understand that the events in tv shows/movies are not based in reality.

Now keep in mind that in movies/tv shows, there is always a spiritual/Moral aspect. One of the major themes that is played out throghout TV/movies is that they generally involve some sort of morality and less evident is the spiritual themes such as Karma/we reap what we soe/miracles.

Take main characters for example; in movies main characters almost always have two qualities; one is that they are moral and the second is that they re unique. Why is this important to spirituality and how it comes about? Well haven't you ever noticed how the main characters always seem to be protected by some force, almost always nearly and miraculously escaping as if protected by a 'higher power'? Isn't it always funny that the hero always seems 'selfless' and interested in the welfare of others? Or dare I say that the hero almost always wants a simple life but ends up being the center of attentions?

To me these themes and my hypothesis that there is a part of the mind that cannot tell the difference between reality and fiction makes these themes become a part of our subconcious....and hence why spirituality always makes more sense over materialism is because a mind inundated with these themes will subconciously be uneasy with moving in a direction of materialism.

But morality existed before TV.
