actives are fun, for sure, but I can identify a a morel from a false morel 100% of the time with just a cursory glance
mushrooms just pop up in cool places/at cool times
you kind of have to think like a mushroom (and be lucky)
speaking of seasonal wild delicacies, I need to get some ramps within the week (if I'm not too late already)
last year there were a bunch in a super public place near my humble abode

pickled ramp martini

It's a ramp
it's like a wild leek/onion/garlic guy that's in areas in northern north america
it's garlicy, like garlic, but kind of sweet, like a green onion
I can pick pounds of them in the spring in my area, as they're prolific as fuck and completey underappreciated
I associate them with wild foraging in the spring, as morels usually pop up, then there's a slight overlap with morels and ramps, and then it's major ramp season
as they are mostly a spring vegetable, the best way to preserve them is with pickling, and then you can make martinis with them

my friends and i were about to die laughing.
and then it got even better
my buddy has a bong that is like a foot and a half tall and has 2 percs and all that fancy shit on it. well the house started smelling so bad from us smoking the bong that she came outside and told us to "turn that thing off". i guess she isnt up to date on what a bong looks like these days.
i thought i was going to choke i was laughing so fucking hard.

That's some funny shit man....

More towards the coast and during the cold wet months, generally December to late February is when things are boomin'. Though Cyanofriscosa (or whater they're being called now?) have been found in the valley they're not as prolific as they over near the coast.

Ive never consciously looked for actives though. Morels are the only specific mushroom Ive looked for but usually I just look for whatever I can find.
