half pint jars with polyfil lids
    #1459173 - 04/15/03 01:05 AM (21 years, 7 days ago)

hey guys, my donkey went ahead and pressure cooked a couple half pint jars that have poly fill lids. the substrate he used was 50 ml of rye berries to 55-60 ml of water. he innoculated the two half pint jars on the 8th and there are still no signs of colonization. do u think this method will work? is there anything already documented on this technique? and links i should see? and tips or input would be greatly appreciated by my donkey.

This seems like a lot of water. Do the jars look wet?
And, I?d recommend using at least pint size jars when working with grain.

At what temperature do you keep the jars?

It is so good to hear from u anno! i hope u saw my post in ur dedicated post from roadkill.

as for water, my donkey was a little worried about its amount, but the measurements werent to exact and when they came outa the pc there was not to much extra moisture (grains sucked pretty much all of it up), the hp jars look just like my quart jars in moisture consistancy so i dont think its a problem.

the temperature is around 80-84 degrees its been pretty steady around there since my donkey thru them in the incubator.

thank you for the links too! and have fun with ur studies!
best wishes anno, i dont kno u but i love ya.

Then it should work. Give it a few more days, unless the jars weren?t sterilized enough or the spores are no good, you should get some growth soon.

my donkey has never done it this way, but his plan is to have all the grains colonize, then put a really simple verm or coco coir layer in the jar over the colonized substrate and just put the jar into the fruiting chamber.. he's seen some mini jars grow with large fruits from little substrate. he's hoping to try and replicate something like that.

is this feasable, any suggestions?

Yes, Una did this a while ago..

Well, it is feasable, but if you can get bigger jars I?d still use them and do propper casings.

But for the sake of experimenting, why not.

my donkey is also using quart jars and stuff too.. but yes, it is for "the sake of experimenting"

i think what my donkey is trying to do is make little grow cultures that he can let his friends try and grow.. so they too can experiance the joy of watching the mushrooms life cycle..

thanks for the input Anno, my donkey salutes you!

smaller jars = CONS-less spawn
less loss in case of contams
less mushrooms
PROS-quicker colonization times
more work (why p.c. 10 pints when u could be p.c.'n 8 QUARTS?)

I've seen Hippe3 case in a friggin 8" pie tin and get some pretty good flushes for such little amount of spawn. When asked why he used pie tins he said that it gave his experiment more controlled conditions.
