Recent college grad, need an adventure/exciting job. Help?
    #14591028 - 06/10/11 02:57 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

So, the title might not be exactly accurate.  Basically, I am 23, recently graduated with a BS in Psychology and Business minor.  I now live with my parents and need to get out of here desperately.

I was considering joining the military, but unfortunately I was on prescription Xanax and another prescription drug to help me with MINOR social anxiety (basically, just wanted to get better talking to the opposite sex).  I've been off those drugs for a month now, doctor knows, etc..  But military won't allow you to join for at least a year after that last pill though.

So, now I'm stuck here in my parents house not knowing what to do.  I just want to find a job I actually WANT.  Something that is actually fun, provides some adventure, etc.. Maybe something that lets you travel the world.  Something that most people don't know exist, but is always hiring.

I only have experience working part time customer service jobs.  Also worked as a janitor once.  But beyond that and my degree, that is all I have.

I know there are a quite a few smart and creative people on here.  Maybe you can help me out of this predicament?  I'm desperately losing my mind right now.  Please help me figure this out.

PS:  In case this is needed as well, I'm currently in the USA.

With a BS in psychology, I think you are most marketable in social service type jobs.  Did you intern or do research anywhere as a student?  If not, maybe go back to school to get some connections and more marketability.

I can't go back to school at this point.  I have no idea how I could afford to right now.  I basically have to get a job at this point.  I do have plans to go back and get a more technical degree later, but need to get a few years of work/money first.

No, I didn't intern or do research.  I probably should have, but this is what I have going for me right now.  I did try to get internships with companies outside of psychology, but no luck.

I'm actually interested in areas outside Psychology, so don't let the degree limit ideas .

Look for a job in one of those areas.  For a little spice, move to a big city.

I'm don't know what those areas area though.  And many I can't get a job in without a more technical degree (why I said I'm going back to college later to get a more technical degree).

Do you have any suggestions?  I wouldn't ask the question if I already had good ideas .

I don't know man, there is peace corps. Jobs are very volatile things. You can go in as a database consultant or whatever, and it will be awesome when you start and then living hell later...or vice versa. The title or the description doesn't define the job in my experience. It is how the company or department is run.

There is also americorps if you are willing to do minimal-pay volunteer type stuff. Sounds adventurous .

Owning your shit is the ticket though...seems to be a game of use or be used.

Americorps is an idea.  I'll check it out.  Do they at least pay enough so you can live on your own and pay for food, and a/c?

I love it! Priorities:

1) Own place
2) Food
3) Air conditioning

Keep searching, and reading up on what's out there. Eventually you're going to have to take a job somewhere, because as the saying goes 'To get a job, you need a job'.

I sense sarcasm in your post.  Please explain to me what is wrong with asking for food, a roof, and A/C if I'm doing something in the US?

Since, I see this may getting off track, here are some other ideas.  Does anyone know of contract jobs in Afgahnistan?  Say truckers transporting stuff that requires zero experience?

Or maybe working in a nuclear plant doing work that no one else wants to do?

Or some other odd jobs that most people don't know about, is always hiring, and is something I could qualify for?

yeah, i think americorps provides housing and a stipend to buy food. it depends on the exact program.

No sarcasm. I just thought the AC priority was funny; I would never think to list AC as one of mine, that's all.

Run a search for autism-related medical copmanies in the area.  my girl does behavioral therapy with autistic kids.  its definitely not adventurous at all, but theres lots of autistic kids out there - so the jobs seem to be abound.

gotta have LOTS OF PATIENCE.  and i mean LOTS.

but other than that, its all about reinforcing positive behavior and shit.  but if you're not the kid type of dude, dont even consider it.  becuase its not yer cup of tea and not a profession to just fuck around with in teh mean time.  kids development is at stake and shit.  those kids need social skills.

but if thats yer cup of tea -- its a good career.  with the right certifications, $125/hr.

At the time, I did want to do something with it.  I've since changed my mind.

Don't think I would want to take that route right now.  But thank you for giving me something concrete and specific.  I may look at it down the road.  Doesn't that require a master in Psychology though?

Anyways, does anyone have any ideas?  Again, maybe someone knows how to get contract work in Afghanistan?  Or something dealing with jobs most people don't know exist, but pay well and are pretty interesting?

To make $125/hr it does.  But you can get a job doing it working w/ certified people that pays like $15/hr and stuff.

Yeah, no real point in doing that.  Trust me, now a days, you have to have a Master in Psychology to do ANYTHING.  BS in Psychology will get you no where in psychology stuff.

Yes it will.  I know plenty of people who do social service work using their BS in psychology.  Social service is very psychology oriented (even though its not research).

They may have other certificates or training though.  Can I ask what exactly they do in social services?  Where they started?  What training they have outside a BS in Psychology?

Not that I don't believe you, but if what you say is true, I would love to look into the areas (if at the least just to learn about those opportunities as well).

Before my wife got her masters degree, she worked at a domestic violence shelter (she had a BS in psychology).  She also worked as a type of case worker for CPS for a bit.  Consider volunteering at a shelter or residential facility in order to get to know the work and network with potential employers.

Check craigslist dude, with a business minor, there are plenty of things you can do.  I see adds for some sort of accounting shit every day on there.

Yes, and to be an accountant, you have to major in accounting (or have some experience in it).  I have neither.

I'm not talking about an "accountant" job specifically, but many of them are looking for business savy people in general who are able to do accounting work in their business along with other duties that strictly an accountant wouldn't be doing.

Typically companies don't hire people to do random things unless its really needed.

They can easily hire accounting majors for that, seeing how the economy is going.  Or Business MAJORS.

Just realize, that you're as fucked as the rest of us. Doesn't matter what/if degree you have. My idiot cousin is now manager at Burger King after a year working there. Doesn't even have his GED.

YES, is it Burger King.

AND YES, it IS Manager, not shift manager or anything like it. Fucking kid is going to be making more money than when i was Photoshopping singage for at&t.

So just realize, you're fucked, and if you're lucky, and that's ALL, something will fall in your lap, or you fall in its'. The BS is all that it says it is. a BullShit in Psychology.

NO, I'm not trying to flame you or your degree, not at all; i certainly couldn't have gotten that degree, i couldn't even stay in school to get a degree in what i was very talented at. Couldn't take/didn't like the schooling itself... i was simply saying in an employer's eyes, it really doesn't matter. They'll look at you first maybe, sure, but one wrong look at his wife's photo or some shit and it's on to the next million people looking for the same job.

And yeah, I'm incredibly cynical because I've been looking for something better (as in, something) for 4 years now, and I've watched my mom, with a BS in Human Resources and 20 years experience, fall into a depression that makes me want to cry everyday because she hasn't worked a solid day in 5 years.

GET LUCKY, or starting slanging those pounds dude.

What seems good about all your posts is at least you still have your optimism. Keep that for as long as your little heart can, cause once it's gone it's quite hard to get back. Haven't seen mine in ages.

There is no reason at all to expect that a college degree would preclude you from getting depressed, or be a get a sweet career for free ticket.

It never ceases to amaze me how much people can expect from a degree, and at the same time how little respect they have for what it actually gives you.

On second thought... maybe you should just skip my post, boost it up to another looser trying to make himself feel better by posting something that sounds wise. I'm in a very bad mood today, probably wouldn't have written it quite so verbose if it wasn't.
