So I have damp vermiculite, and cant oven dry it. And I dont know how well sun drying will work. The verm is fine before sterilization, but after its done the dry verm layer (Which is dry beforehand) is damp. am I using too much water? or sterilizing it for too long? (Steam, 1 hour) it sucks, it was so easy before there was water in the verm.

wait what are we talking about?
if your bag of verm got wet.
dry it on a cookie sheet in your oven.
if your dry verm layer in your jars is getting wet.
put your foil tighter.
and raise the jars up out of the water more.
they should BARELY be touching the water.
we are only steam sterilizing.
and you are taping your holes before putting the foil on right?
it goes like dry verm > masking/micropore tape > foil

damp verm, yes. but barely. And you tape your holes? I never have, when I had dry verm. I only taped them when I didnt have a dry verm layer and I used micropore.

well i tape them so less water enters/exits.
i just stab through the tape when innoculating and dont replace the tape.
thats when the dry verm barrier does its job

i took the 10 minutes to fix my oven. turns out theres an internal fuse. I havent needed to use it, until now so i figured i'd give it a shot! and it works Crispy dry verm, 350 for two and a half hours. It was a deep dish verm cake.
