So I was riding my bike today on the side of the road minding my business and two wanna be gangsta white guys (to put it nicely) drove up beside me and said "You better get the fuck over before we run your ass over" and drove off. What the fuck? Its legal to ride a bike on the street and I was going atleast 20 mph leaving plunty of room so cars could pass. Should I have gotten there liscence plate and reported it as a death threat to the police? Should I have confronted them at the red light? I'm just really pissed off right now! The guy who said it literally looked like:

ride in the middle of the lane from now on, fuck them.
I don't know about where you live, but a bicycle has to abide by the same laws as a motor vehicle here in Florida. So you have every right to that whole lane, unless you were on some bike lane. But even then that gives the thugs no reason to fuck with you.

Yeah it just makes me feel unsafe to have someone say that to me. Like forreal I'm sorry I'm the 1% part of the population that actually gives 2 shits about global warming and tries not to pollute as much. Whatever if I get hit by a car, it'll defiantly be there fault because I am VERY careful when riding. I just don't want to end up fucked up from some wigger hitting me yo And spiritual snorkle your right by the fact that cars make people feel powerful, but when they step out of there cars 99% of these piece of shit road ragers wouldn't say one word to my face.

too many blue hairs can't see, don't look, over medicated, and that doesn't even include the drunks.

well thanks for the perspective guys! makes me feel a little better. I was seriously thinking about kicking there asses at the stop light since I know karate, but I figured nothing positive could come from that. They'd probably just become meaner people then they already are
I feel like a badass though because I'm one of the small percentage with the physical endurance and bawls to ride on the road Plus less polluting (not that it'll stop global warming or anything)

Just like how because something is illegal doesn't make it wrong, just because something is legal doesn't make it right. Riding a bike in the middle of the lane on a road where speeds of 35-60mph is permitted is ignorant and stupid. I guarantee you for every 10 cars that pass by, 8 of them are cursing the jerk on the bike who can't stay to the shoulder, whose movements are unsafely and unsettlingly unpredictable, and who has no common sense or common courtesy. Those meat-headed G's were just telling him what everyone says to themselves behind their rolled up windows.
This is why places have designated bike lanes, because bikes don't belong on the road with cars, it's the true order of things. Drivers are annoyed by it, and cyclists have to rationalize it with this self-righteous environmentalist crap they always spew. It's an ugly scene all around. If you don't like not being able to ride your bike on roads where bikes don't (realistically) belong, then push for your town to implement bike lanes.

Actually I was staying on my shoulder and riding perfectly straight. And environmental crap? You think that the BILLIONS of gallons of gasoline we burn every year doesn't have an impact on everyone's lives? If it doesn't right now it soon will. But I'm not hear to argue for 45 minutes. There's plunty of info out if you're open minded enough to look. But yes I agree I do not ride in the middle of the road and hold up traffic. If people get pissed off because they have to slow down for 10 seconds and pass me up then fuck them, they are impatient pieces of shit

When environmentalism is used to bolster someone's sense of self-righteousness, in that case, yeah, it's crap.

I do think it has an impact, I also know some cyclists won't solve shit. Same reason people recycle. They do it to feel good about themselves, to relieve themselves of a neurotic guilt espoused by the green campaigns. It's a neat little abstract perk to riding your bike everywhere. Recycling, cycling, and this and that are not real solutions to our wastefulness as a species. The scale on which this is happening is huge... but if you want to turn the water off when you brush your teeth, while your idiot neighbor goes to work forgetting that his garden hose is spraying full blast into his yard, be my guest.

Sorry I feel good about not polluting the air? Sorry I don't give up and throw trash on the ground just because everyone else is doing it or waste water just because everyone else is doing it? In my mind I am right for not polluting. How could I possibly be wrong?
I am fairly certain that if everyone lived like me the world would be a better place. I am not a fantastic human being just a respectable one The world probably won't get any better polluting wise, but atleast I died trying and didn't wimper and follow the crowd of sheeple.

I'm not saying you should be sorry for feeling good that you're not a wasteful, obnoxious asshole. I try to waste as little as possible, and it's second-nature and all... but it is what it is. You might be doing the right thing, you might be saving money, but you're not really saving the planet.

You realize that the billions of gallons of gasoline are taxed and pay for the roads you ride on correct?
As does the registration and licensing fees we pay for our cars.
Bikes do not pay for roads at this time perhaps they should be taxed as well..
I drive everyday on probably the most biked road in the US (PCH) I can tell you there is a large amount of people who bike in large groups, riding way to close to the dividing lines. Just daring you to hit them.
Its cool if you ride your bike, the guys that passed and said shit to you sound like total dbags.
But a large majority of road bikers are are assholes who feel entitled to the road because they are saving the world.

durp durp I have a car, but I also ride my bicycle 90% of the time. I only drive if the distance is too far, or the weather sucks. I paid my share to use the road. I don't need to pay MORE to ride my bike on the road. Besides, bikes don't damage the roads at all.
Anyway OP, I feel ya. Sometimes drivers are fucking twats. They unnecessarily overtake you/drive way too close to you. You just gotta be a responsible bike rider, and ride as far to the side of the road as is safe. Sometimes it's not safe to ride right next to the curb. There's tons of rocks/busted glass/thorns on the side of the road that would pop my tires, so sometimes I have to ride in the middle of the street. It pisses off a lot of drivers, but I just smile and watch their fat asses drive by me while I bust my ass gettin in great shape

Amen brother, the part about fatass drivers getting pissed off really relates to me. I am kind and curtious on the road allowing traffic to easily pass me up yet some people comming from mcdonalds in their air conditioned cars get mad because they have to wait five seconds and then pass me up. Its alright though.... There is beauty that comes with the ugliness I think we'd get along well, its funny how some people have the same exact train of thought

Yea man I always get drivers honking at me or aggressively passing me.
To get downtown here in seattle there are basically only 2 ways you can do it by bike. The first one involves riding along Aurora (Highway 99) and there's about a half mile stretch where traffic moves at 45-50mph...it's scary as hell riding along it but it's the fastest way (and it's a nice downhill), or the other one involves riding along a half mile road where traffic travels about 40mph, and is a gradual incline the whole length (ughh so tiring).
Otherwise though we have an amazing trial system designed specifically for biking. At least 75miles worth of trails, but none that lead into downtown where I work
What kinda bike do you have?

Bikers are pretty stupid mostly lol
They snare and look at you when you drive by, if your long boarding they come real close to you no matter where you are in the street and look back at you like your trash for not being on a bike like them.
Or if your jogging through the park on a huge trail, they will ride up fast behind you and then quickly go around you acting as if you have ruined their bike ride.
Bikers will slow traffic and sight see the whole time
OP were you wearing those tight azz shorts that bikers wear? maybe they targeted you because of that

you don't know anything about biking
first of all there are some bikers who have that superiority complex, but not all of them.
of course they will come up behind you fast, they are going 20+mph
bikers usually keep as fast a pace as they can. It's not easy to ride a bike 30mph...
Also those tight ass shorts are for comfort. You have clearly never been on a road bike. The saddles are small, and clothing creates a lot of friction which can cause bad rashes, also the clothing is hot as hell, and causes an incredible amount of sweat. The bike shorts wick away sweat, as well as pad your ass so it's more comfortable.
I don't have a pic of my bike, but here's basically what it looks like (except it's dark blue w/orange bar tape)

Yea it's pretty fast. I always rode BMX/Mountain bikes and just bought my road bike like 4 months ago. I seriously am in love with it lol...it's really fast and I love haulin ass on it It was expensive, I think total I've spent about $800 (but I replaced the rear derailleur/pedals/chain/rear cassette) except i had shoulder surgery 3 weeks ago, so I can't ride it until August I'm pissed, because in Seattle the next 3 months are the only sunny months outta the year!!
as for bumps....hahah no it does not. It's a steel frame, so it's a bit rougher on the road than an aluminum or carbon fiber frame would be...but I don't mind.I have to avoid big bumps because my tires are so skinny that a huge bump could give me a flat. That's why road bikers HAVE to use the road, it's the only flat, paved surface there is

They're much more susceptible to fatal injury on the road than drivers. Bicycle riding is also much more engaging than driving a car, and there's less likelihood of slipping off into a daydream.
However, morons drive cars, morons ride bikes, and it's safer to assume those around you on the road are just that. Morons. They are the majority, after all.

Where I live, there's miles of levee to ride on with beautiful river scenery, and plenty of bike trails otherwise. Unless you've got somewhere particular to go, these are great places to ride.
Bikes are most often ridden on the sidewalk here and everyone is pretty accustomed to that. There isn't an abundance of sidewalk traffic.
When riders are on the shoulder of the road, I always give them plenty of room for error. It's the ones why try to ride as if they are just another car, or try to implicate me in their untimely death that are irritating. It's not so much a matter of time or impatience.

hmm, sounds like you just aren't used to cyclists in the road. In Seattle...omg everyone has a bike. Seriously during the summer there are bikers on every road everywhere. Haha, they really have to ride as if they're another car, because that's the only safe way to ride. Granted, there are plenty of bike lanes/trails to ride on, but lots of people use bikes as their main method of transportation (me) so I'm forced to ride in the road.
Also, trust me...if you are riding your bike in traffic you are alert as fuck.

i like cow poo said: the part about fatass drivers getting pissed off really relates to me.
some people comming from mcdonalds in their air conditioned cars get mad because they have to wait five seconds and then pass me up.
Some people who drive are in fine shape, and have places to go. They don't want to have to worry about running over some moron on a bike because he thinks he's entitled to hold up traffic as he Saves the Universe.
These comments about fat-ass drivers and the like only reinforce the idea that self-important cyclists deserve to become hood ornaments.
What's up with the bike hate in this thread? I've had that happen to me RP, all the time actually. People in their cars just can't take 3 seconds out of their day to pass a bike that's in the shoulder. Doesn't make any sense to me. I live the most bike friendly city in the world and there are still assholes like you encountered. Just keep on biking man.

I give them enough space to transform into a whale if they want to, when they're riding on the shoulder. Everybody makes good points, though I think everyone is talking about a little something different than the next person in this thread.

Cars that won't pass me even though they have all the room in the world piss me off more than immature children. They create incredibly awkward situations.
Like... riding on the line of a REALLY wide right turn lane. Imagine: I could be riding side by side with another bike, and there would still be room to pass to our right. But people get scared (I guess?) and won't pass me to make the right turn; I just laugh at them usually. Do people really not know where their tires are? How do they parallel park??

FIFY
But yeah, dipshit rednecks hate people on bikes. I had a friend get run off his bike in Greenville NC once, and they turned around and then ran over the bike itself, destroying it. He started carrying a gun when biking after that and I don't fucking blame him. Just remember that, they are and will probably always be losers. Unfortunately the good old USA is chock full of asswipes like this.
PS: great to see some of you morons weighing in on this very thread.

Damn. I've never really gotten hassled here in sunny southern California.
I read these horror stories elsewhere; I guess I should count my blessings.
If someone ran my bike over, I would hunt them down though. I hold grudges.
