If you swallowed a piece smaller than a pea of matter packed as tightly (or almost as tightly) as a neutron star? Would you just temporarily triple in weight until you passed it through your system?

depends on what the matter is made off, if its cake then it'll swell, if its metal then it'll pass through.

I'd say if you ate something the size of a pea, that weighed 400 lbs, your tissues wouldn't be able to support the pressure, and it would tear it's way through your body. A pea is probably around 1/4" in diameter, so the surface area exerting a force on your body would be (.5)(4pi)(r^2). That means that pea would exert a pressure of around 4000psi!

if you ate something with the mass and density of a neutron star then you would probably be compressed to oblivion by the intense gravitational forces

I'd go with the "rip through your body" or the "gravitational forces screwing you over" theories

I was just going with the hypothetical situation that RP proposed, he didn't say how he planned on lifting the 400lb pea. He just wanted to know what would happen if you swallowed it.

It is impossible to have something the size of a pea that has the same mass AND density of a neutron star, by the definition of mass and density.
From Wikipedia: Neutron stars have overall densities predicted by the APR EOS of 3.7e17 to 5.9e17 kg/m3 (2.6e14 to 4.1e14 times the density of the Sun),[4] which compares with the approximate density of an atomic nucleus of 3e17 kg/m3
A 1/4" diameter pea would have a volume of 1.3406257058e-7 m^3, so using 5.9e17 as the density would mean the pea weighs 7.91e10 kg or 174 billion pounds. I guess a pea sized object would weight a bit more than 400 lbs.
If you put in context though, the earth has a mass of 5.9742e24 kilograms. We aren't "compressed into oblivion" by being too close to earth, because our mass is negligible compared to the mass of earth. I stand by my theory that the pea would simply rip through our tissues while it is attracted to the earth beneath our feet.

Yeah, I really didn't think about ripping through tissue, it didn't occur to me until I brought it up to my girlfriend.

Just my stoned thought of the day.

Certainly not. I'm well aware that some things can be snorted as well.

From wikipedia: "This density is approximately equivalent to the mass of the entire human population compressed to the size of a sugar cube."
So 400 pounds is a VERY light estimate.

Dragon's Egg sounds good, I'm putting it on my reading list.
I wonder what would happen if you got something the size of a grain of sand or something that weighed like 30 pounds or something though, that would be weird.
