One time my dad got a thai chill pepper seed in his eye while cutting some up.
I've never hear him yell and scream like that prior to or since.
I though he had stabbed himself in the eye the way he was yelling..
It scared the bejeezus out of me at first.
...yeah lava shits are not fun!!

When I was about six, my uncle was babysitting me one night. My mom had been growing red habanero peppers in our garden. I wandered down there and was looking around in a field of green shit. Suddenly, bright red stuff! Growing in a garden! It must be safe to eat, then. My uncle, being the that he was, let me eat a mouthful of those damn peppers when I was just 6 years old. I have been almost totally desensitized to capsaicin pain ever since. Which is nice, I can eat a shitload of spice and be fine, and I LOVE spicy food.

I never realized it was harmful. I always figured it was just causing a burning sensation in the same benign way capsaicin does. So you recommend against ever eating it? Are the benefits that make consumption of small amounts worth while?

Yeah, I've done this on numerous occasions. With scotch bonnets, habaneros, and all sorts of less spicy peppers. I usually pour a glass of milk, go to the sink, and submerge my eye in it. I'll keep my eye open inside the milk. It feels really weird, but it helps a lot.

Since we're on the topic, spicy foods or foods that contain capsaicin in general have shown several health benefits.
When used regularly in ones diet I've heard it can increase metabolism quite a bit. It has been shown to regulate blood sugar levels in those with diabetes, and has reveresed diabetes in mice. It also causes cancer cells to undergo apoptosis, same thing THC and other cannabinoids have been shown to do. I've read a few stories of people claiming they cured their cancer with a dramatic change in diet, and using cannabis & capsaicin in their diet.
The American Association for Cancer Research reports studies suggesting capsaicin is able to kill prostate cancer cells by causing them to undergo apoptosis. The studies were performed on tumors formed by human prostate cancer cell cultures grown in mouse models, and showed tumors treated with capsaicin were about one-fifth the size of the untreated tumors. There have been several clinical studies conducted in Japan and China that showed natural capsaicin directly inhibits the growth of leukemic cells. Another study carried out at the University of Nottingham suggests capsaicin is able to trigger apoptosis in human lung cancer cells as well.
Even before I heard about the health benefits of chili-peppers I've always ate lots of em'. I eat probably at least a gram of ground cayenne pepper and other sorts of chilis-peppers in my diet daily, if not more. I literally put chili-peppers on everything I eat, from eggs to pasta, pizza to fish...Some chocolate and ice cream as well

Yeah, I generally try to add a little spice to everything I eat if it seems fitting. It feels like it cleanses my body, and that could just be the spicy feeling but it definitely does have some health benefits.

I was referring to health benefits of wasabi/horseradish/mustard.
But since you brought it up, I'd like to point out that capsaicin isn't the only capsaicinoid to cause the benefits you mention. Bell peppers aren't spicey at all, but they contain other capsaicinoids that cause all the same health benefits.

My favorite hot sauce is Frank's Red Hot, am I hardcore? Just kidding... I can't handle real hot sauce, but I do love me some vinegar sauce.
and on the off-topic: I thought onions were good for you! My salads consist of a whole onion, some iceberg lettuce, massive amounts of vinegar, and a tiny bit of oil. And onions aren't spicy.

Try taking a bite out of a red onion and tell me they're not spicy. I won't compare them to the bhut jolokia like someone else tried to earlier, but it has some sulfur containing compounds similar to those in garlic and horseradish which can burn. It's just a completely different kind of burn. And it's also far less potent.
You haven't ever accidentally put too much onion in your salad or in a sandwich, and had to start picking it out because it starts burning?
But yeah, I always thought onions and mustard and garlic and wasabi were healthy. I know garlic contains a lot of components that are healthy, but now I want to know if the hazardous chemicals in it are hazardous enough to outweigh the healthy chemicals.
On another note, I just found out pink peppercorns are illegal in Florida.
I've been looking for them everywhere, and now I know why I can't find them.

What I don't understand is how some people are ridiculously over sensitive to spicy foods.
My dad and most of my family is like this...I'll make something that has a little bit of spice in it for flavor, when I eat it I literally experience absolutely NO hot/spicy sensation while my dad is damn near in tears and sweating. So next time I make it I'll use a lot less to where it is almost pointless as I can't even taste it, and he will still complain about it being too damn spicy.

Hahaha, I make food for my family all the time, but I can't cook for them if I'm taking piracetam. For whatever reason piracetam makes me completely immune to spice, so I can't tell how much is too much. Or I have to bring them over to add the spice so I don't set their faces on fire.

The other day I took a huge bite out of a yellow onion in front of my girlfriend.... Trust me, I love onions.
It's like my salads are cucumber salads... if you replace the cucumbers with onions. I eat pure onion salads.. Then again they are white and yellow onions, I'm sure red are worse.

Yellow are wayyy mellower than white, which is still mellower than red. But white and red are the very sulphurous ones.
Ever try chewing up a raw garlic clove? You'll fart pure garlic the next day. It's weird as shit.

I shall begin my foray into peppers today. Consider that I am fairly sensitive to spiciness, not a wuss, and have eaten thai peppers. What would be a good starting point and what would I be able to find at a Harry's farmers market or in a regular grocery store?
