i have high hopes for dolphins though, ESPECIALLY given recent research

i agree with this. it can be argued that all species experience and remember stimuli. however, homo sapien seems to be the only species that creates noises or squiggly lines to express and define models of the reality we see around us.

i guess at the most basic level.. how do i word this

ok, so we assign value to words (squiggles on a page or verbal sounds) that relay to models (ideas) that we have of the world and how it works

so i guess what our species REALLY excels at is its ability to RELATE

we relate the written word "cat" with the spoken word "cat" and this calls into short term memory the long term memory we have of what we call cats. or something?

It's involuntary too. If someone says "cat" it's impossible not to conjure up the image of a cat.

The mind is strange.

Some gorillas have learned sign language does that constitute consciousness?  Reading up on koko the gorilla gives me the chills.

If they could make a brain that could somehow communicate it would be scary as shit.

i'm not too sure on this yet because of a lack of documentation and evidence

but my OPINION is that these great apes are not communicating the same way we do

from the footage ive seen, these apes seem to communicate a few words at a time, but never come close to composing the dynamic and complex sentences that we do

correct if i'm wrong, i haven't followed this facet of science in some years

I haven't done much research but yeah its mostly a few words jumbled together from what I understand. But it still shows that they are able to effectively express emotions like happiness, sadness, loneliness etc. even in a simple form it's still pretty remarkable.

This truly is a huge step in science, growing a brain... Imagine the possibilities, I think we're on to something here.  :strokebeard:

From what I;ve seen and read, Koko is very easily distracted when using the sign language and only has a very limited capacity for expressing things. I'm not even convinced that this isn't just a very advanced form of mimicry...

Koko is using language, IMHO. (Edit- was? She's dead by now, yes?)

But other animals are conscious, have awareness and feelings. Dogs do.
Language isn't a requirement for that. Neither is memory really.

But dogs do have a primitive form of language. Pack signalling and stuff, that seems to be an indicator of consciousness to me.

Don't get me wrong, I wasn't saying Kodo isn't conscious either.

Cats also... I believe all animals have awareness and feelings, just on different levels than us humans.

Dogs don't have language.
They don't manipulate linguistic symbols as symbols.
Koko could use language to describe things that were not there, to make jof language.okes.
She made up signs sometimes, she understood the abstract nature of language.

Not language as such, but definitely a form of communication.

That's cool. I didn't say that language was required for consciousness btw, its just what I see as the best indicator of consciousness.

I disagree.  Watson the jeopardy computer understands and composes language perfectly, but isn't conscious.

Whereas a fish, by the definition of consciousness, is conscious, but doesn't communicate.

Because it was programmed by organisms with consciousness.

I'm talking higher consciousness. Not simply the ability to react to stimuli, go back and read my previous posts.

I don't buy that.  What created us?  Is the universe conscious?

One of your other posts mentioned higher consciousness, but the post I replied to just mentioned consciousness.

Higher consciousness doesn't exactly have a definition either.  It differs significantly wherever you go.  How do we look for indicators of something subjective?
