Lighting Advice
    #14525346 - 05/28/11 08:18 AM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Greetings Everyone!

As this is my first post, I believe it is in the right place, but feel free to move if it isn't. I am currenly into my first grow and I believe that I have read nearly everything I can on the site. I've done my best thus far to just read rather than ask questions, and with all the information here, i've gotten pretty far. At this point, I am just looking for advice from a few that have already been down the road.

I constructed a 108qt FC, and have recently noc'd up 5 large bags, 5 dry quarts each, with 30cc GT using the block tek. I pretty much have everything done and am just waiting for col. now. With extra time on my hands, I have been thinking about the lighting I plan to use, so I figured I would show what I am doing, and ask for advice.

I am using 2 13watt CFL lights on EITHER side of the FC (4) total. I realize this could be too much, but figured if I kept an eye on the temp everything would be ok. Since this is a bluk grow I wanted to ensure I had enough.

What I am looking for advice on is light placement. Currently I have the light coming in from the sides because my top is not transparent. I've searched for an in depth topic on light position, but really could not find anything. I know direct light isn't required, and that what I have will work fine, I just figured that since I have a few weeks waiting for my bags to col I could make adjustments to the FC if need be.

So, would anyone have any advice on the positioning of the light, and if one way would work better for bulk than the other? Thanks, and thanks to everyone who has contributed to the mounds of information here.

This thread was moved from Advanced Mycology.

Reason:
Off topic in advanced mycology.

Light from the sides is superior to light from directly above.  You could easily cut back to one or two of those CFLs.

Here is a link I found using google. I am sure there are a few other places that have them cheaper. This one is dimmable, which I do not believe would be required.

Those should work well.  LED technology is progressing pretty rapidly.  Don't let anyone tell you they don't work either.  The Mrs and my underground Mountain Mushroom Farm has 100% LED lighting. You can also get waterproof 6500K flood and spotlights too.  We have several hundred feet of light rope, with two strands over each shelf, and spotlights shining down at various angles and positions from the ceiling. We use 6500K in the grow area on a 12/12 schedule, and 2700K in the colonization room whenever we're in there.

Any benifit to placing them inside the tubs to get the light closer, and sealing holes for the cord, or is that overkill?

Nothing that keeps water away from electricity is overkill.  I see no reason to seal the hole they pass through.  My LED light strips are only a few inches away from the substrates.  This is necessary, because the intensity of light decreases by the square of the distance.  The best thing about light rope is you can directly spray it with water.

Waterproof SMD 5050 Flexible Ribbon, 0.2 watt per LED, 300 LEDs, 12VDC, 48 watts,12mm*5000mm, 120°, Military Waterproofing IP68 Degree, DC connector, 3M tape at the back,Epistar Chip, Yellow Color PCB

This would be made to order at 6500k, and the above is one roll, 16 ft. My shelves are going to be 18 inches wide. My question is: do you think i can use 1 strip per shelve or would it be better for me to get 2 strips per shelf at a lower watt range?

These cost about $110 per roll including shipping and power supplies.

Also wouldn't that be a 60 watt strip?

Yea, that's how the math works out, so I wonder why they say 48 watt?

You might look into waterproof LED spot lights too.  They're brighter.  I use both, but am covering a larger area.

Which color light strips will give me the closest to 6500k?

Thanks Everyone,
Chad

listen if you are spending money on a light bulb, then the person you are buying it from should be able to tell you what it is.

every light bulb i have ever seen has the rating on it. so yea, problem is solved.
