"Scientists create tiny artificial brain that exhibits 12 seconds of short term memory"
It’s not artificial intelligence in the Turing test sense, but the technicolor ring you see above is actually an artificial micro-brain, derived from rat brain cells--just 40 to 60 neurons in total--that is capable of about 12 seconds of short-term memory. Developed by a team at the University of Pittsburgh, the brain was created in an attempt to artificially nurture a working brain into existence so that researchers could study neural networks and how our brains transmit electrical signals and store data so efficiently. The did so by attaching a layer of proteins to a silicon disk and adding brain cells from embryonic rats that attached themselves to the proteins and grew to connect with one another in the ring seen above.
But as if the growing of a tiny, functioning, donut-shaped brain in a petri dish wasn’t enough, the team found that when they stimulate the neurons with electricity, the pulse would circulate the micro-brain for a full 12 seconds. That’s roughly 12 seconds longer than they thought it would (they expected the pulse to live for about a quarter of a second). That’s essentially short-term memory. The neurons were relaying the signal in sequence, persistently, mimicking the activity we know as working memory (though admittedly we don’t understand it that well). The brain is basically storing the stimulus long after the stimulus is no more, which is a big deal for a tiny brain grown in a dish.

OMG... that is sooo fucking cool!!!
This experiment will be funded further im sure.
Creating a brain? Thats worth the research!
Humanity might not be doomed after all OR We are doomed cause we will create the brain the kills us

Nah, let's not get over excited here. Memory =/= consciousness.
This is cool but I think we're still a long way away from fembots...unfortunately.

In something that has no receptors to recieve stimuli from the outside world, I don't know.
I'm gonna have to blaze a bud and have a think about this one..

Well, it would have to have receptors to receive stimuli in order to have memory right? Otherwise, what exactly is 'it' remembering?
I agree though, memory, though necessary for consciousness, is not sufficient.

Yeah, that's a good point. The stimuli are simple electrical signals and they seem to linger in the neurones... short-term memory. Many organisms have this ability, most (if not all) animals do... I think what we associate with higher consciousness is long-term memory, the ability to recall, at will, events that are long in the past...
I think what my question should have been is: "how to we measure consciousness in something that has no way to transmit stimuli to other consciousnesses?"
If we imagine for a minute that this thing is conscious, for the sake of argument. If this thing is strictly just a mind, an isolated conscious entity, then I'd imagine the only way to judge whether it is conscious would be to measure the electrical signals given off by its workings. But how can we be sure those signals, however ordered, are actually indicative of consciousness? We need something more, something that requires the mind to transmit stimuli to other consciousnesses, some kind of language...
I think language is the indicator of true higher consciousness. Consciousness may exist but it can't be proven without language...
I hope that stream of consciousness wasn't too hard to follow.

I want some. Can we use them like spare tanks of gas. Maybe we can eventually plug em in when we are all hungover or lacking serotonin.

i agree with this. it can be argued that all species experience and remember stimuli. however, homo sapien seems to be the only species that creates noises or squiggly lines to express and define models of the reality we see around us.
