turtles (cleaning/eating/catching)
#14586928 - 06/09/11 06:11 PM (12 years, 7 months ago) |

We are going turtle hunting soon as soon as they are off their eggs. Ive never caught/cleaned nor eaten turtle, I'm pretty stoked. Cleaning one seems fairly straight forward, but I noticed lots of people do things differently. Same goes with catching and cooking, just wondering if someone has any luck or experience in this. Same goes for eating, recipes? preparation?

shoot them in the top of the head to kill them. split the shell with a axe. the body will keep moving as u clean it. use i needle-nose pliers to peel the skin off the meat. good luck.

\ well I guess thats what I meant heh, after their egg laying. I know you're supposed to wait for something to happen something dealing with eggs and then its cool to go kill them.

Where I grew up it was legal to catch them on a trot line...which we set up with treble hooks and baited with cut up bluegills or whatever roadkill we could find.
Poke a small hole in a leg and stick an airhose in. Seal as best you can and fill up the turtle. It kind of peels some of the skin away from the meat. Other than that, nail them down on their back and start cutting. The airhose cut down our cleaning time from ~45mins to 30 or so.
i use a sawsall to split the shell off.
as far as killing it...i never bothered to shoot one, irritate it with a stick..when he grabs it,pull his head out of the shell and have someone cut it off with a very large knife or machete.
its been a long time but when i cooked them i usually made soup...or parboiled the meat and then bbq'd it on the grill. i never got any complaints. I deep fried some in nugget form too.
turtle is delicious, good luck. and be careful

jesus those turtles look like they would take my foot clean off. I remember fetching a Frisbee out of a lagoon and I stepped on this shell, and I pulled my foot up and my small toe had a huge gash in it. I never even really felt it, but my small toe was bleeding all over the place. I had to run back to my homies house and stick my foot in the tub.

if youre on the 45th paralell...you wont find them that big. alligator snappers and large regular snappers are more of a southern thing.
another thing i forgot to mention, if you do catch a decent sized one- you need to let it sit in a garbage can with clean water a couple days so its system gets cleaned of mud and or whatever it ate. turtles eat some pretty rank stuff and it make the meat taste like its last meal.

ive handled many of these turtles(Snapper and Alligator snapper). They usually stink something fierce as such had deterred me from the thought of eating them. softshells on the other hand are suppos to be good. Im not a big meat eater as well im a reptile fanatic and dont like to kill animals specially turtles. but people gotta eat and its alway fun to try something new.

I moved a turtle that big off the road a couple weeks ago. Fucker tried to take my hand off. He was huge and heavy and smelled and kept hissing and snapping at me. Must have been suicidal because he kept going back to the road no matter which side I put him on. Finally I rolled him down a hill into a marsh and he swam off. Guess I should have just ate him .

I've seen backpacks made from those alligator shells, poaching is shitty. But turtles around here snappers and the like are fairly abundant and I dont see how you can talk down apon someone hunting and eating animals. If it wasnt for such a practice you wouldnt be here today.

Alligator snappers are listed as vulnerable. Rules differ state to state. In Florida you can only be in possession of one at a time, and you're not allowed to shoot them. Also, while you don't need a license for catching turtles, if you're using a rod/reel, you can be fined for not having a fishing license.
If any Floridians are curious, here's the rules for us: Turtles and Tortoises
Turtles: Most freshwater turtles may be taken manually throughout the year or by use of baited hooks, bows, dip nets, traps (designed so any freshwater fish caught may escape) or by spearing (during daylight hours only from a boat or shore). The taking of turtles by bucket trap, snare or shooting with a firearm is prohibited. No license or permit is required to take turtles. River cooters may not be taken from April 15 through July 31. No softshell turtles or their eggs may be taken from the wild during the period May 1 through July 31. No person shall possess more than 50 eggs taken from the wild in the aggregate of species of freshwater turtle native to Florida except as authorized by permit from the FWC executive director. The purchase or sale of turtle eggs taken from the wild is prohibited. On Lake Okeechobee, no person may take or sell any peninsular cooter (Pseudemys peninsularis), Florida red-bellied turtle (Pseudemys nelsoni), Florida snapping turle (Chelydra serpentina osceola), or Florida soft-shelled turtle (Apalone ferox) having a carapace length of less than eight inches.
Eggs of the following restricted turtle species are subject to the same possession limits as apply for those turtles. Possession limit, turtles or eggs: river cooter, two; alligator snapping turtle, one; loggerhead musk turtle, two; box turtle, two; Barbour’s map turtle, two; Escambia River map turtle, two; diamondback terrapins, two. No person shall buy, sell or possess for sale any alligator snapping turtle, box turtle, Barbour’s map turtle, river cooter, loggerhead musk turtle, Escambia River map turtle, diamondback terrapins, or parts thereof.
The use of gasoline or any other chemical or gaseous substances to drive wildlife from their retreats is prohibited.
Gopher Tortoises: No person shall buy, sell, take or possess any gopher tortoise, or any part thereof, except by permit from the FWC executive director. Possession of gopher tortoises may be authorized by permit when the owner can demonstrate that such tortoise(s)were legally acquired and possessed before July 1, 1988.

Turtles: Resident licensed anglers and children under 16 may take, possess, and transport turtles for personal use. Western painted, snapping, and spiny softshell turtles are the only harvestable species and may be taken. Harvest by explosives, drugs, poisons, lime, and other harmful substances is prohibited. Harvest by traps, nets, or other commercial equipment requires a recreational turtle license in addition to an angling license. A DNR permit is required to collect turtle eggs from natural nests. Residents under age 18 may take, possess, rent, or sell up to 25 turtles for use in a nonprofit turtle race. • The snapping turtle possession limit is 3. Minimum size limit is 12" in shell length. Snapping turtles may not be taken during May and June. • Spiny softshell minimum size limit is 12" in shell length. Spiny softshells may not be taken June 1-July 15. • Western painted turtle maximum size limit is 51⁄2" in shell length, except that those used in turtle races may be of any length greater than 4".
