Agaricus augustus!!! ??? the prince !. june 9 2011

Habitat: Where does it grow? Eg. woods, pasture, state, province, country, altitude, etc. What does it grow on? Eg. soil, dung, wood (dead, living, what kind of wood?), etc.
in some old landscaping in some wood mulch with pine trees . Richmond B.C.
Gills: Color, attached/not, gills/pores, etc. not attached , creamish when young to a light brown . very thick veil
Stem: Length, diameter, color, texture, hollow/solid, thin/thick, etc.
huge, thick ,very shaggy, inbedded deep into the ground Cap: Diameter, color, texture, conical/spherical, convex/concave, etc. huge, dark brown fibrils on a light background, splitting from being a bit dry ,
Spore print color: Very important!
Bruising: Color that the mushroom bruises, if any.
yellow
Other information: Scent of the mushroom, anything else you think is important, large close-up pictures showing stem, cap and gills.
the scent is the most sweetest scent i have ever smelled on a mushroom and i now know what every meant by the good smell!
i am pretty damb sure these are A augustus. this is my first time finding them. i was actually working and i drove by them on a delivery and from the road i thought they were Amanitas. so i did my pick up and turned around and quickly hopped out and took some pics and to my pleasant surprise they were Agaricus instead of Amanitas!! how friggin sweet is that.
no my question. these were in a business site with warehouses and businesses around on the side of the road. would these be safe to eat ? i am a rural picker and dont really pick in the city.

The question on safety hinges on whether the ground in the area is contaminated with something you'd rather not eat. Without specific chemical tests, it's tough to know. How long has the place been developed? What sorts of things do the businesses there deal in, especially chemicals like heavy metals? You'll be the best judge of that.
Incidentally, the next to last photo clearly shows yellow bruising, another important feature for identifying the species.
-------------------- Happy mushrooming!

There's one or two other Agaricus lookalikes, but I'd call that A. augustus. One of the finest mushrooms ever to venture in my mouth. I usually just fry up the cap whole and eat it as a midnight snack. Little butter, little salt or not.
-------------------- In ancient times, when demons roamed with man, They hunted, loved and lost, hand in hand, As time went on, the difference between them faded. You couldn't tell anymore, demons and man were related, and some would say the same, but who would like to claim? In time, Gods had even forgot, Demons, too, once love had sought. In times recent I remember, Once I was a man, In my heart I had an ember, I'll relate the best I can but it was snuffed, one distant December. And yet here I stand, no flesh, no bones, no seed or semen, All that's left is this Demon.

well its been a business park since atleast the 80's by the looks of it. i really dont know much about what gets manufactured in that area. ive only been there a few times.
could eating something one time get you sick? i was under the impression the ingesting of heavy metal s is bad when it accumulates ? one time probably wouldnt hurt a person would it?
yes i noticed the yellow bruising. so do you think its A augustus ?Quote:

nice, they just look delicous!! i think the smaller on on the left with the cap that looks like its melting , looks like A augustus from what ive seen in pics.

Was the section of stem between the veil and the gills smooth or rough?

Most of them I saw were about 4 inches in diameter. This thing was insane, though. Wiki said the cap grows up to a diameter of about 10 inches but mine was a couple longer.

oooh man they're so tasty! you gotta eat them fresh (lightly sauteed in butter or cook with pork) to get the full effect. They're kinda like Matsi's - they lose most of the flava after preserving.
