But you're not veg.  You just "dont like eating meat and prefer beans/rice/grains/veg."

On the other topic, to me, it's just like those people who think it's cool to be schizophrenic, so they tell everyone they're schizophrenic because an online test that they lied to told them so.

I consider myself vegetarian because the vast majority of my diet is plant matter. It's not a hard concept. It's not equal parts meat and veggies, it's not mostly meat, it's almost entirely plants. One day of the month where a christian doesn't pray doesn't make them not a christian.

The definition of "christian" does not include praying every single day.

The definition of vegetarian is someone who does not ever consume meat.

It's like saying "I'm not a murderer because I rarely murder people."

I'd consider myself more of a vocabulary/grammar nazi than a veggie nazi.

My diet is about the same as yours. It's not vegetarian. Why consider yourself a vegetarian if you eat meat sometimes?

What is your stance on being vegetarian but occasionally eating meat?
For example a small piece of sausage at christmas or something.

I am vegetarian primarily for the fact that its healthier
, allows more people to eat (meat is WAY more energy wasteful to produce than beans and rice), and also animal rights. However I wouldn't have a problem with occasionally, like a couple of times a year eating meat, as in christmas or easter or something.

What are your thoughts / views?

I think this all reflects our tendency toward and glorification of labels and absolutes.  If a someone came to me with this revelation, the conversation wouldn't be-

them- "I'm a vegetarian but I eat meat sometimes like on holidays and at weddings"
me- "Then you're not a vegetarian, are you?"

It'd be
them- "I'm a vegetarian but I eat meat sometimes like on holidays and at weddings"
me- "That's great that you're a vegetarian, keep it up."

Instead of nitpicking the few times someone eats meat, celebrate the increasing number of occasions when they're choosing not to.  The era of the nazi vegan approach is over.  You need to encourage people.  You catch more flies with honey, all that shit.

how am I being a nazi? a vegetarian does not eat meat by definition, if you eat meat once a month you may be nearly vegetarian, but not truly. I'm not being holier-than-thou, it's just a matter of fact. I'm totally sorry that vegetarians and vegans don't want these definitions to become confused and have people giving or serving them meat and animal products.

also, you'll see I did go out of my way to tell him that I thought it was great that he had cut down so much on his meat eating, don't be so insecure as to think that by simply wanting the definition of vegetarianism upheld I'm just trying to act self-righteous and superior.

Best argument in the thread.

Just admit that you guys aren't vegetarians.
I know it will feel bad that you can no longer feel like part of an elite group.
But let's call a spade a spade here.

Agreed.

You don't deserve the super cool label of "vegetarian" unless you really are!

Meat, by definition, is "the flesh of an animal."  Fish are animals.  They belong to the kingdom "Animalia"

Flesh, by definition is "The soft substance consisting of muscle and fat that is found between the skin and bones of an animal"

What's there to get?

My post wasn't directed toward you personally, that was just me being lazy with grammar sorry.  It's just something I see alot in this argument.

As for your point about wanting to keep these definitions for the sake of not being served meat/animal products, I don't buy it.  I don't think people who occasionally eat meat calling themselves vegetarians is going to dilute common sense to the point where you'll get served a vegetarian meal or product with meat.

Yeah, it doesn't make sense not to call it meat.  However, there are differences between fish and livestock in terms of both health and sustainability, and arguably in terms of suffering as well.  The abuses of the factory farming system don't really apply to fishing, since they're mostly caught in the wild(and fish farming doesn't involve the kind of tight spaces that factory-farmed animals have to deal with).  Also, while there is a lot of unsustainable fishing, it's not that difficult to find out which fish are harvested sustainably and which ones aren't.

Anyway, in the same way that you're a flexible vegetarian(I think the term is actually "flexitarian"), I'm a flexible pescetarian(fish-eater).  I do occasionally eat beef, chicken, and pork, but I when I go grocery shopping, the only meat I buy is fish.

Eat what you want. Thats how i feel. As long as your eating healthy is what matters. I hardly eat meat, but i'm completely healthy. But i do eat meat, and am not against it. I am against animal cruelty though.
