Vegitarianism and occasional meat
    #14585644 - 06/09/11 01:42 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

What is your stance on being vegetarian but occasionally eating meat?
For example a small piece of sausage at christmas or something.

I am vegetarian primarily for the fact that its healthier, allows more people to eat (meat is WAY more energy wasteful to produce than beans and rice), and also animal rights. However I wouldn't have a problem with occasionally, like a couple of times a year eating meat, as in christmas or easter or something.

What are your thoughts / views?

Slightly hypocritical in light of the "animal rights" reason though.

Not really. I would NEVER buy it myself. But lets say I was at my parents or something on christmas, I might.

The animal doesn't deserve rights if your parents bought it?

I understand this from the standpoint of "Well, the animals are going to be killed anyway."
But if you're going to take that stance, you might as well eat meat.

I think it's a good idea, just don't call yourself a vegetarian.

I am a vegan. if I drank milk or ate eggs occasionally I would not be a vegan.

if you call yourself a vegetarian but intentionally eat meat, no matter how rarely, you are wrong. a vegetarian eats NO meat. zero. if you call yourself a vegetarian because you "only eat fish" the word for that is pescetarian. I'm sure that will sound elitist to some people on the shroomery but it's really just a matter of not wanting people to misrepresent us.

I don't get how the fish != meat crowd works but whatever lol.
I actually don't label myself, I don't like labels to define who I am.

It depends on what you're looking to accomplish.

I eat meat maybe once a month, and I still consider myself vegetarian. It's not a religion, there's no hard set rules.
The meat I do eat comes from a local butcher who only sells free range meats, no factory farming bullshit.

As a species we're omnivores anyways, and I feel that for the 29-30 days a month that I don't eat meat that I make a good difference in the world. The problem is that even if I don't eat meat the vast majority of our culture eats huge slabs every single meal so my contribution is nothing but a drop in an ocean of animal abuse, methane production and manure spillage.

Elitist, yes I would agree.

veg*nism is not a religion but it does have a concrete definition, and that is that no flesh is consumed. I don't mean to denigrate you at all, I think it's great that you have cut down on your meat eating, it's just that if you tell people and spread the idea that you are a vegetarian that eats meat it makes it that much harder for the rest of us to explain to people that we do not. It's not a matter of being the vegan police kicking you out of our exclusive club or anything like that.

I'm not the kind of person you'll see with meat is murder t-shirts or a go vegan sticker on the back of my car, so I try not to be caught up in the labels and such, but the general public thinking that the word vegetarian means "someone who only eats a little bit of meat" is harmful to us.

Why/how do you consider yourself vegetarian? You eat meat = you're not a vegetarian. Why not tell the truth and just say, "I'm not a vegetarian, but I eat meat sparingly."

There are so many people who want to be seen as a vegetarian, it's just ridiculous. If you eat fish..you are not a vegetarian!! One of my co-workers tried to pull that...I can't believe how much of vegetarianism seems to be about the image.

i personally am a vegetarian and sparingly eat meant. i dont like to label myself but i have a set of rules i go by specifically due to vegetarian health factors.

-I never eat red meat, unless someone just cooked some fried bacon-wrapped pickles,  :dancingbacon: (always willing to try something a friend/family made)
-ill eat chicken/turkey/fish/shrimp only if its about to go to waste and its good quality and not squishy tasting
-i always allow myself to eat fish in my sushi or a nova lox bagel :tongue2:
-i make sure to get my daily amount of iron
-i never pay for meat, unless sushi/nova lox
-dont eat too much tofu, produces moar estrogen

i naturally dont like red meat anymore, besides my one true love bacon, but besides that think of it as keeping meat in moderation and not a strict vegetarian elite diet.
after all youre only human:earth:

Meat, by definition, is "the flesh of an animal."  Fish are animals.  They belong to the kingdom "Animalia"

Flesh, by definition is "The soft substance consisting of muscle and fat that is found between the skin and bones of an animal"

What's there to get?

hes saying, how people who see him eating fish and know that hes a veg, will be like "see youre not a veg youre eating meat! MUAHAHA I WIN" even though its considered pescatarian, its all the sudden someone elses deal to question his eating habits.
people do that shit to me all the time and it annoys me. even though i dont go around telling people im veg, i just tell them i dont like eating meat and prefer beans/rice/grains/veg

especially with my cousins family, as soon as they found out i was veg, all the sudden it was the main fucking discussion, becoming everyones problem.
:doublefacepalm:

at least i think thats what hes trying to get out. /endrant

I pretty much do this. I used to be really strict on being vegetarian but those ideals slowly waned over the years. Then I had a big meat eating craze. Now i'm at a point where I eat mostly veggie but will indulge in meat when eating out and when I feel like a big meal at home/i see it cheap on the reduced counter.

  Fucking veggie nazi's here.

I consider myself vegetarian because the vast majority of my diet is plant matter. It's not a hard concept. It's not equal parts meat and veggies, it's not mostly meat, it's almost entirely plants. One day of the month where a christian doesn't pray doesn't make them not a christian.

I will never eat pork again though, that's one thing I won't do.
