Questions about possible careers in my future

So I've just graduated with a BS in psychology. I've been looking for research assistant jobs within the field but with the high competitiveness of these positions I have had no luck with positive responses. My plan has been and still is at this point, to find an entry level psychology position and gain some experience. After some time I was hoping perhaps to get financial help to go to graduate school. Regardless, I know that I do need to go to graduate school if I want to stay within psychology. However, I feel like it will be more expensive and harder to go to graduate school at this point without a related job or otherwise experience within the field. As of now I feel as though I would like to work within schizophrenia. I'm also interested in substance abuse. However, I'm more or less interested in substance abuse because I'm interested in substances as a whole. Other than advice, I guess I'm also interested in learning of jobs I could possibly pursue that would be related to drugs (legal and illegal). I'm very interested in the effects of drugs on an individual and how the drugs affect the brain as far as neurotransmitters and such. During my last semester at school I took a neuroscience class. I knew I had to take this class for a while and I dreaded it because I thought I would have a harder time with it because it was so science based. Once I finally took the class I enjoyed it a lot and it was relevant to my interests in both schizophrenia and drugs. Of course it is no surprise that it would be relevant but I guess I didn't expect to to learn ass much from the class as well as enjoy it as much as I did.

Easy. Apply at a school district as an aide for behavior-challenged kids. You won't be "the man" but you'll get relevant resume material. Oh, and you won't get paid shit either.

I'll graduate with a BS in psychology next year. I've got a ton of research assistance experience and excellent letters from my professor. I wanted to get into I/O so I went and talked to my prof a few days ago. Know what he said? Ditch the GRE, take the GMAT this summer and get an MBA in management. That's my plan now...good thing I have a business minor.
The field is just flooded right now. No offense, but your chances of getting into a clinical program is zero to none. My ex wanted to do that and she's probably the most qualified person I've ever met, but she still got rejected. I'm talkin 3.7gpa (4:0 psych), 6 research assistant positions and letters from her profs, clinical experience working with ADHD kids, AND she's given presentations at an ivy league school about how maximizers don't work and got published for it (her profs work, but she was arguing against a guy who was on the Daily Show's work).
You need a perfect record and serious connections/luck to land a Ph.D. in there right now..
As far as job opportunities without grad school? We're fucked too. There aren't many good ones and the competition even for those is tough. you can't do any kind of counseling (other than suicide hotlines and stuff) without a degree.
Cheers on picking a useless major too

Well this doesn't sound good for me... As far as money, I'm not totally concerned with high pay at this point. I'm entry level looking for experience and something that can pay the bills, which I'm sure it would be as much or more then my current job. Relating back to what I originally said, is there something I can potentially do relating to drugs? Not only was my major psych, but my minor was philosophy, also useless.

Absolutely zero jobs for psyc grads. And by zero I mean zero. Like maybe one a month will pop up and the hordes of mcdonalds working psyc grads all jump on it like rabid dogs.
Ive just accepted that I got robbed in college. At least I had a shit load of fun
You would think in a bad economy people would seek more mental health professionals but it seems people just buy more alcohol instead (not joking, saw it on the news yesterday).
If it makes you feel better every field of work is in the gutter to some extent.
But i'll leave on a bad note: youth (up to age 25 i think) unemployment in greece and spain is at 40+%.
Ok maybe i'll leave on a good note with some advice: get creative and VERY ambitious.

No responses to drug related careers, not necessarily psych relevant? Even if the job market is shitty, I do not feel that college was a waste. It is very expensive, which is negative, but I've learned much from school. It has improved my thinking skills as well as my amount of knowledge about things in general.

Perhaps the pub was not the correct place for this topic? If there is a better suited place for this topic moderator, could you please move it?

Maybe apply at a methadone/adhd/parkinsons clinic or something like that? Doing research is gonna be tough without a masters but maybe you could find an intern/entry level spot to get something on your curriculum vitae?
If you're in the central ohio area I could give you the name of a really interesting parkinson's trainer. He rents part of my gpas office building and I talked to him about a position once but I live too far away. Long shot but eh, always willing to help another psychology major/shroomerite.

Thanks man. Actually I'm no where near the Ohio area, but I have considered applying to a methadone clinic. The main issue with entry level jobs is that they still seem to want experience, which is understandable. However, how can one get experience without ever being able to get a job in the first place?
