Possible cobweb mold contamination
    #14585259 - 06/09/11 12:17 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

Hello,

I have been reading the Shroomery for some time to gain knowledge on growing mushrooms.

But let's get straight to what brings me to my first post:

I have some BRF cakes inoculated with Mexican Cubensis (at least that's what the vendor advertised). For the record they come from an LC I made by cloning an aborted mushroom picked on a growbox that was not doing too well (it produced mostly aborts).

So the cakes were sterilized by boiling, then inoculated with the LC. Colonization was fast (maybe two weeks) which is I believe normal when using an LC from a clone (from what I read on the Shroomery )

After they were fully colonized I put them in a ghetto fruiting chamber inspired by some video I had seen on youtube, that is a transparent plastic box with no holes and some water in the bottom on the box. The case were put on some container with damp vermiculite to avoid them being straight in the water.

Those containers were rubbed with alcohol and peroxyde prior to putting the cakes in them, and the vermiculite was put in the microwave for 5 minutes as well. The plastic box was of course rubbed with alcohol and peroxyde. I fan several times a day, generally once in the morning and twice or more in the evening cause I'm not home during the day.

So everything was going really well, the cakes began pinning then fruiting, I have some fruits growing right now on those two cakes. There are also two casings in that ghetto fruiting chamber which are showing pinheads right now as well.

But this was until tonight when I found out just back from work that there was some grey growth on my cakes. There is also what I believe is mycelium growing on the stems (maybe too high humidity ?)

I think it might be cobweb mold since I don't think it was there yesterday evening, meaning it must have been spreading fast (or I just had not noticed it )

I treated it with peroxyde (filled a syringe without the needle with 3% peroxyde straight from the botte and poured some everywhere I saw this grey shit.) I heard some bubbling/sparkling when I did that but I guess it would do this noise even applied on healthy mycelium ?

Here are some pictures so that you guys can see for yourselves:

First cake, some bubbling since the picture was taken right after I poured some peroxyde on it

Second cake (the odd growth was already there before but it was pure white, not grey)

Another view of this same second cake

My casings (one from wheat grain, one from a crumbled BRF cake, both cased with damp vermiculite only) which seem to be doing just fine but are in the same fruiting chamber, they are showing some pins

So do you guys think it is cobweb mold or might it be something else ?

What's bothering me is that my fruits seemed to be growing well, what should I do about them ? I thought I could try to let them grow or harvest them right now then dry them, but with this possible contam I'm just not sure.

I have read the number one rule of contams "when in doubt, throw it out", but I can't help at least trying to save them.

Will eating some cobweb mold make you sick ?

Of course the risk is that this actually is not cobweb mold, so any help or piece of advice would be greatly appreciated.

Oh and for the record I have made myself a better fruiting chamber (perlite in the bottom and holes filled with polifill on the sides) in which four BRF cakes are fruiting right now, they seem to be doing right, I hope they won't catch this shit !

I plan on turning my ghetto FC in a better fruiting chamber as soon as what's in it has fruited.

Well thanks in advance for any help or piece of advice you guys can give me !

that is normal mycelium coming from the mushrooms, they will be fine.  the reason your new grow looks good is because they are getting enough air and moisture.

Hello,

Thanks for the quick reply,

So the growth on the stems seems ok, but did you notice the grey patches ? I should have taken photos before applying peroxyde because it was much easier to see, but I will try and see what happens. Let's just hope they will keep on growing and that those two casings next to the cakes won't get contaminated (if there is some contamination going on).

Anyway even if this is the case this won't be all lost because it will be the occasion for me to drill some holes in this box and put some perlite on the bottom, and since I have two more casing colonizing plus two colonized jars of grain waiting in the fridge I wont have to wait for too long if I have to start over.

And I still have my second box doing fine, I'll try not to peek until harvest to avoid risking contamination

But I was excited to get my first very own mushrooms

So you don't think I need to worry about those grey patches (you can catch a glimpse of it on the second picture) ?

Thanks,

Pyre

Turns out it was probably just some bruising, I guess, since I noticed some blue coloration on all my fruiting cakes near the biggest fruits, and they did pretty well in the end

Most of them sporulated since I was off for the week end, giving them a try right now !
