Birthing my first cakes soon, but leaving town 10 days later...
    #14581045 - 06/08/11 05:42 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Hi guys, this is my first post but like most people I've been lurking for a couple months already...

Following the PF TEK as it's my first time, but using the Bonne Maman jam jars which are slightly larger than half a pint. I knocked up 12 jars, 4 weeks ago; 3 fully colonised and consolidated for almost a week, 6 are two-thirds done and 3 show no signs of Myc (not bad, methinks...)

I'm going to dunk and roll the 3 consolidated cakes and put them in my SGFC a la RR's videos (mist and fan etc...).

However, 10 days later I have to leave town for Glastonbury festival which will probably only give me time for one flush off the 3 cakes (if I'm lucky). I'll be away for 6 days - any suggestions for what to do with the cakes? Can I fridge them? Or just leave them in the FC and hope for no contams and dunk and roll on return?

Hope you can help

Cheers!

Ps: The whole point of me doing the grow was to take some to the festival so I don't mind too much if I end up losing 3 cakes after 1 flush... just wondered if there were any suggestions?

If you can have a friend come over to mist/fan and turn lights on and off, I would do that.  If not I would just put the lights on a timer (12/12), have a fan and cool mist blowing in the room, and let them go for the week.  cubes are very resilient:thumbup:

Thanks MOPE! I'll probably leave them in the FC then.

I've got 12inch desk fan which I could leave going near my SGFC and I've got a timer for my energy-saving bulb so could leave it 12/12. And one of my housemates might be trusted to mist every once in a while - but she is a bit of a scatterbrain!

I'll give the perlite a heavy misting the day leave.

Thanks again dude!

You can birth them, and stick them in a bag or jar. Mix some water and verm (about 2-2.5 cups verm for 1 cup of water), and cover the cakes with the verm. Put it in a dark place and they will have fun colonizing. You're still going to want to dunk and roll.

I did that for about a month once. I'm repeating the experiment, and it's been about a month and a half. No contams yet, but they colonize the verm slowly.

I think there a youtube vid on vermiculite sterilization, but I don't know if it's really necessary.
