Firefox: Killing plugin-container.exe a smart thing to do?

It was getting ridiculous! Plugin-container.exe was starting to eat more resources (CPU + memory) than the firefox process itself! This is especially sucky on an old box like mine.
Here's what i did:
Quote:
1..Open a fresh tab 2..type about:config in the address bar 3..type dom.ipc 4..set all True values to False 5..restart Firefox
Results: faster browsing, way less load on the CPU and memory!
Soooo... smart thing to do or put those right back on?

So far I browse faster, spend less CPU and memory and nothing's amiss, save for occasionally having to reload a page that didnt display correctly.
So far its for the win.

Yeah, after this latest version of firefox came out, switching to Chrome was, for me, the smart thing to do. I didn't want to try and hack Firefox to make it work reasonably when Chrome is a download away.
My friend has a powerful system and when I told him of my recent Firefox woes he had nothing but good things to say of the new version...so maybe it only effects older, slower PC's or XP machines or something, do you have an older/XP system?

Usually when a plugin like Flash crashes, you'll get a friendly error message like this and you can keep browsing. If you disable out-of-process plugins, a crash will take down the entire browser. But if you notice a big performance improvement and you're not concerned about the stability implications, there's nothing wrong with turning it off. That's how it always was in versions of Firefox prior to 3.6.4.

Actually the performance increase is considerable, and I'm not too concerned about browser crashes because FF's recovery system never failed me yet.
I'm glad Mozilla didnt pull a Microsoft and tied a vital process into the thing so you cant switch it off.

Just did this, I noticed FF was a little slower after the newest version came out. Very noticeable decrease in loading times.
Thanks WS!

Just a close look at my task manager and some natural curiosity.
Having played with this a few more days.. The plugin crashes I had previouslyu appear to all have been actually CAUSED by plugin-container.exe Now no more vids etc crash
And whenever I look, its single digit CPU usage it used to be 20-60% routinely if you added plugin-container.exe to it. Memory use, used to be higher when combined than now, like 1/5 to 2/5 higher.
And I'm rid of almost all my Shroomery page load STAL time.

ff for me takes up roughly .5g memory, where as plugin container is around .02g. Personally never had a problem with plugin-container and/or ff crashes, I run like 30-40 tabs sometimes. But I guess maybe the 8g of ram and 2.9ghz has somethign to do with it. idk.
