Best techniques to store for a couple of weeks??
    #14581948 - 06/08/11 09:09 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Hi folks, I appreciate your help again with my first crop!

I've read numerous posts about preservation techniques but have a couple of questions.

1) Sounds like best not to pick freshies and put in baggie, even if it's only for a couple of days.  Is there an effective technique to keep them fresh for a few days?  Perhaps I just leave them in the growth chamber and pick them when I am ready to consume?  Or can I pick them and store them somehow in fresh form for a couple of days?  If so, how?

2) And wow, there are so many strings on drying techniques that I am VERY confused which approcah to take.  Sounds like lots of heat is bad so I will definitely avoid.  Is there a good, easy technigue to dry a small crop well enough for 2-3 weeks of storage?

Thanks for your help!

Pick them when they are ready.

They will store in a paper bag in the fridge for about a week.

You can make a smoothy with them and store the smoothie in the freezer. Make it thick or the goods will settle. The frozen smoothy should last for years. Six-year-old smoothies have tested good. Add Vitamin C to add sourness and act as a preservative.

Fan overnight and then Damp rid. Cut the stems up the middle so the moisture inside can escape.

Vit C is an antioxidant preservative. It preserves the active ingredients from oxidation. Citric acid preserves by inhibiting mold/bacterial growth.

If you take a blued fresh specimen (depending on how long it was blue), and sprinkle Vitamin C on it, it will change back to its original color, or turn less blue. So, not only doses it retard oxidation, it can (in a few circumstances) reverse it.
It will work on dried specimens to some extent. It can also prevent some or all bluing when drying specimens when applied as a mist when dissolved in water or alcohol.

The easiest way, especially if you aren't in a hurry, is to just put them between two sheets of newspaper. Use a single page from any of the paper sections (not the glossy ads) Flip them once every day until they are cracker dry.

You may have to replace your newspaper page after the first day but that's okay because most sections have more than one page!  Should take about 3 - 4 days using this method.  Once they're dry they're okay to put into zip-locks.

I've done this every time I've grown cubes and it works perfectly fine.  :yesnod:

Honey will preserve as well.
