Solar powered grow room
    #14579954 - 06/08/11 01:59 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

I would like to know if anyone has the knowledge on how to set up a solar powered grow room.

I know it all depends on size lights etc etc, but has anyone done something like this already or knows anyone that has done something like this??

this is what I understand is needed
1. the solar panel
2. an inverter (large battery if im not mistaken)
3. a current converter?  dc/ac etc

Please help me  figure this out at least what the basic setup would be.

Info in the net can be somewhat confusing since i dont know much about electricity

see how many watts you want to run then how big of panels you need check pricing then bank account. If the name on your bank statement is warren buffet or bill gates continue with the project otherwise stop now and buy a greenhouse if you want solar powered grows.

To have batteries available to run large high power lights all night then panels big enough not only to charge the batts for nighttime but to have current to run the panels during the day will be pricey. Until the government stops paying big oil to produce oil and subsidizes solar its not a viable option for most people.

Battery stored energy is about 50% less efficient than direct from the source.  It would be a pretty complex system to have set up.  I would want mine still tied into a main power source as backup.
That being said, intimidating project...

A green house in a south facing garden is the ultimate solar powered grow room

Solar panels (at least the ones I have) produce about .5V, so a decent panel of 32 can keep a deep cell marine battery charged pretty well. Run everything off dc from that battery and you're golden. You can get 2 or 3 16V panels and run them into 4 deep cell marine batteries and power a small grow room. Now I'm not sure on electric equations, but I can have my buddy figure it out. I've got another friend who used to have a house powered by solar panels and they weren't very rich. It can be done, and during the day you can have the lights dc'd from the panel(s).

Its fucked up the technology is so expensive, almost ridiculous.

Has anyone heard of bedini or perendev motors? Ive never known if they really work or if they are just hoaxes?

Certainly there must be alternative forms of generating electricity that are cost effective. I am craft handy and can build some basic things.

when you run a whole house off it your need to be an energy miser. People that do that do things like convert over a deep freezer to a fridge to save power and really watch everything close.

To do a grow room would be really expensive and I would shoot for maybe powering 1 AC unit with it first as the hotter it gets is usually due to lots of sun so you can power a 12 volt AC unit with it as anyone who grows indoors knows you need lots of AC.

Irie,
It would be a dream, a 12v system.
12v LED mixed light panels, 12v fan, boat pump & car A/C if needed!!
Respect,
Z

I guess I'm thinking more like a small indoor veggie patch rather than a large scale grow op. There's always wind power. There's a guy out here that's got one wind generator, and all the excess energy he doesn't use goes back into the grid and the power company has to pay him for it. It's been so effective he's purchased a second generator. There's a wind foil design that is triangular, which is supposed to be the most efficient and can operate off any direction of wind. I'll ask my buddy about that one.

As for my buddy who had his house run on solar energy, he was way back in the woods where you're not getting any electricity.

The only issue with solar is it's gotta be DC, as AC would require some other things (I'd have to ask my other buddy). I don't think you could produce the power cheaply enough up front, but the money you save and lack of attention drawn would possibly be worth it, and also if you decide to take it down, you can also tie into the grid and cut down hugely on your power bills. It's definitely an investment
