so we all know it is coffee/coco coir/ and vermiculite. and we all know that coir and verm are pretty contaminant resistant. and a lot of the posts i read when using CCV its like a 50/50 chance that ppl are getting contam. well it comes from the coffee. so how do we get the coffee not to mold out after around the 3-6 day of sitting in the CCV? i mean i grew with coir and vermiculite for a year now and my plants never got contaminated. i see all these people trying to pasteurize it and they still get contam between those days of letting the spawn and sub sit. so the question i am asking is how do you make the coffee pasteurized good enough not to mess up the whole tub.
(sorry if some of this makes no sense but this was the thought i had the other day.) or is there any other substitute than coffee that is more of a contam restient product to use.
ideas and comments, get them out there.

Following proper pasteurization teks on here, I don't ever have any issues with coffee causing contamination in my coir grows.  The only time I've had issues is when using questionable spawn.

:whathesaid:

coffee must be properly pasteurized to kill all the bad stuff in them & keep the good stuff.

Contams using coffee come from improper pasteurization technique.

also, mushrooms aren't plants.

i kno they are not plants. i was referencing to how i can use the coir as a medium and it is contam proof. i guess the real question was why pasteurize the whole batch. cant you just pasteurize the coffee grinds. i mean if every thing is mixed in a area by aseptic techniques?

edit: i think i also asked if there was a substitute for coffee that would be less of a risk to contamination.

no substitute...gypsum & Coir & verm are the only 3 things in bulk that are highly contam resistant.

If you're doing Damion5050's coir tek, you're not properly pasteurizing the coir or verm.

Coffee always has to be properly pasteurized or will contam.

I do coffee in jars in a pot of water on the stove & do my C+V+G prep just like Damion's tek...

As I've typed here repeatedly over the years, coffee does not cause contamination. If it did, I wouldn't get 999 out of 1000 substrates making it through harvest with no mold, because I use coffee in every single one of them. Improper technique causes contamination.  For those who consider 'pasteurization' to be dumping boiling water into a bucket, they would be advised to stay away from good substrates, and substrate additives such as coffee, and just be satisfied with mediocre results.

Also, while mold spores don't germinate on coir, they certainly do on vermiculite.  Even if one leaves out the coffee and the boost it provides, they'll still get mold growing in the vermiculite if they fail to follow proper procedure.

There is no substitute for the benefits to mushroom production from coffee.  I doubt seriously it's the 'nutes' because there's lots of different nitrogen sources, etc., but they don't pack the punch of coffee.  It must be one of the other 200 or so compounds in coffee, or the combination of all of them.

Just as a curious question for you RR, what method do you use (bulk or otherwise) for pasteurizing you're bulk? I know I've seen your 55 gallon steamer and a plethora of other methods for straw etc, but is there a tek that you would recommend for beginners in bulk dealing with coir and poo?

Mainly asking because I see this a lot as well, and i'm not 100% certain on my methods either.

Thanks RR

Prep poo just like he does in the videos, which is how I prep my coffee grounds.

bulk substrate (or additives) in quart jars w/ double foil in a pot w/ water on the stove.

put bulk to pasteurize in jars. put jars in 3/4 of water in a pot. Get the water to boiling point. Let it boil for a few minutes, then turn of the heat with the lid on, after half an hour get to boil again and repeat 2 times.

I do that with turkey bags. I normally wait for the internal bag temp to reach 170F, then turn off the heat, wait for 15 mins of so then re-boil the water, and kinda keep that up until it's been about 90 mins, then I leave the heat off and let the turkey bags sit for another hour in the water...

How well does a turkey roaster work? I can bring it to 170F and let it stay there.... would this be a good way to let the bulk sit and pasteurize if I can fit 3 large turkey bags of substrate in there?

roaster oven works real good. 150 for 1 one hour works for me.

Cept the oven bags u buy in the grocery are bullshit. They always leak. You end up double or triple bagging and you're lucky to get 2 runs out of em. Not to mention they run over a dollar per individual bag.

Large autoclave bags by contrast are great for this purpose. 60 cents a piece at the mad season.

Don't allow the center of the substrate to exceed 160F/60C or you'll have problems.  Any method you use to obtain 140F to 160F at the center for 90 minutes is going to work.  Oven bags suck.

ok thanks guys!!! The oven bags I found seem to have done a good job, but now I'm worried about the 40 jars I just spawned to my 10 tubs... I guess we'll see what happens when I get back into town...

Sorry guys total noob here chiming in...

So I want my bulk sub to be pasteurized in the following manner it seems but couple things to clarify please.
So either in jars surrounded by water, all in a big pot. Or can I just stuff my  poo/straw/CCV into a paint strainer which goes  in my biggest pot of water brought to temp?
Use my remote temp prob, closest to center mass of my sub and bring inner temp to 150f and hold for what, 90 min?  Is 120 min better, worse?  Thoughts? I have all the time in the world for my fun little guys :mushroom2:

Making a couple different batches of substrates today so I would love help from the pros and people who have been down this path a bit more times than I
I am paralyzed by analysis today, I have all the tools in front of me but I can't decide on the best mix or the best way to pasteurize even...

Thanks for reading, cheers

I recommend Damion5050's Elementary coir tek for all bulk beginners. No need for true pasteurization on it.

Once you get that procedure down & comfortable w/ spawning to bulk, I'd say start messing with pasteurization.

Pasteurizing in jars is easier than in pillow cases, because you don't have to worry about squeezing a pillow case into field capacity. It's already done when you load the jars w/ your manure or coffee or whatever needs proper pasteurization.

Hope that all helps.

was just making a couple mini monos and when i was doing damion5050 tek i thought it would be a bright idea to throw in the mornings coffee grinds. it was only 2 cups worth but shit im mad at myself, think the myc can fight it off if it contams or should i just start over?
