Aquarium Heater Questions..
    #1457717 - 04/14/03 04:51 PM (20 years, 11 months ago)

Hey guys..

I just bought a heater at walmart. It was for 30-60 gallon aquarium's, and either was 100w or 200w. I forget. Doesn't matter though.

When testing a few things, I noticed even after setting the temp up past the regular 78^F default, was the power LED light that shows when the heater element is active, did NOT stay on regularly. It would stay on maybe 40 seconds to start with, and then flicker a few times. It would come on and off throughout the 10 minutes or so. Looked totally random, no set path.

Anyways, this really didn't seem right to me.

I tested all of the outlets, used different extension cords, different power strips, etc. All with the same results.

Took it back.

Got same exact model exchange. Same thing happened. Got a 3rd one. It's doing the same thing. I believe it's a Tetra model.

So what I'm wondering is..

Is this a normal occurance? I know it says it takes 24 hours for the water temp to stabilize, but I couldn't imagine it seeing a few degree peak within a few seconds of being put in the water..or at least not a large enough one to shut it off.

If it's not normal, I'm done buying from Walmart. I'll go to a regular pet store. Can anyone spot off any names of ones they've used that stay on consistently?

Thanks.

that's just the way they work .
the thermostat is sensing air temp inside that glass tube, not the actual water temp .that's why it takes a while to stabilize .

Thanks dudes.

Now I can tell my friend whats up.

His fish tank has sat dormat for 4 months.  He's got a ton of fish supplies, and enough fish food to make at least 4-5lbs of dried fish.

I guess back in the old days, when he used to grow fish, he never used a heater.
