Trying to fruit Shitake blocks that were allowed to dry out.

Hello all,
I wanted to figure out how to get my Shitake blocks to produce a second flush. I had let them dry out after they just sat around after very nice first flushes. They were rock hard, but were clearly not dead (one even tried to pop out a fruit...this got me thinking that it was time for an experiment).
I decided to give them a dunk and then to put them back into fruiting conditions.
Conclusion: it just might be the case that a freshly rehydrated Shitake block is prime substrate for molds. I suppose that the surface is dead and so is vulnerable...
Anyway, they began to look a tad fuzzy...no green yet, but I may be seeing a mold of another color on one of them. ....or I am just paranoid. It just seems to be happening a bit too fast for my liking.
I am going to move these to an outdoor GH, but wanted to check with the forum to see if anyone else has tried this.
Take care,
JD

I believe a dunk is the way forward, RR says dont dunk em longer than an hour or so I recall.
I need to do the same thing today, got 3 blocks looking like they need some water, seem to dry out pretty much after 3 months in the bag and a 1st flush.

If they dried totally out, they'll mold when rehydrated. At the very least, put them in a flowerbed or under some trees or shrubs outdoors. The vegetation will provide natural shade and humidity, and they'll do far better than indoors. RR

Yes, this morning proved my suspicions (molds). They are outside.
I might get a few fruits. I did from a total neglect block that I put in the same location.
Take care,

So, resting them out under shade is far better than indoors, before soaking again for 2nd flush. If it rains outside, and wets the block, is it ok as well?
How will i know when, it is ready for the next flush?

This is still a mystery to me. The outdoor fruits were fortuitous, and were not helped to occur at all.
Now, it was during a wetter time of the year, and I am sure that this was a factor.
I set four other blocks in the same shady spot, after a soak, and have been watering them, but it seems that we are finally heating up here and they just might not cooperate.
Thanks for asking. Let us know if you figure anything else out and I will do the same.
Take care,
JD

I'm yet to get a decent second flush too, dunked mine, one or two shrooms, and spots of green appeared, left in the grass out front to see if nature will help me
Theres a lot to learn in successful shiitake growing, slowly but surely we will succeed!
