Say Hello to My Little Friend (a mini panaeolus tub) -- Updates, pins, pics, uncased = ??

Had a quart of spawn laying around, so I put it into a mini-tub I made with 2 ziploc containers, complete with knife poked air holes and a duct tape hinge. It's 1 quart of Panaeolus cyanescens cased with 50/50 vermiculite and peat (buffered with lime).

Update 6/13/11 Woke up, checked the box, had pins on the un-cased substrate. To you experts, what's the best thing to do, now? Late case it?

Update 6/15/11 Lots of fruits on the uncased substrate! I'm impressed.

Thanks for sharing. I am curious to see how this turns out.
Is there any manure in your mix?

This. Pans require manure to fruit.

No, there's no manure in this. Supposedly, pans will fruit from cased grain. I wanted to do something different, as a test. I hope that it fruits. I will keep you guys posted with it.
Here's a quote from the Panaeolus FAQ: http://www.shroomery.org/8421/Panaeolus-cyanescens-FAQ#rye "Will they fruit directly from rye grain? You can fruit them on straight rye grain, but the resulting shrooms will be very small and difficult to harvest and print. Hundreds of very small shrooms. Wall to wall flushes with 100+ shrooms yielding about 1-2 grams dry. Shroom size is 1-3 inch tall with caps under 1/4 inch(usually about 1/8 inch). 1 inch substrate layer in a 8" x 8" brownie pan, cased with peat/perlite at less then 1/4 inch. You would be better off using the rye grain spawn to inoculate jars of manure based substrates. THE USE of Manure or manure straw DRASTICALLY increases yield(approx. 7-14 times the yield) and decreases contamination rate, speed to flush, and just about everything else."

I took out the casing layer, then mixed with manure. I found a bag of Hoffman's cow manure when I was cleaning, last night, and couldn't pass it up. I had only been able to get composted cow manure that smelled like a farm and had questionable ammonia conent, before now. I wanted to try Hoffman's to see how it does, since it seems like the best store bought stuff you can get.
Anyhow, you could say that the whole point of me doing these different things is to experiment and see what works with substrates, fruiting conditions, FAE, monotubs, etc.

Pan species on rye are going to fruit but they will be very small and hard to pick them.

They're in manure, I changed the formula.

I'm wondering if I should late case it, or not.

I would scratch it then case it, let it sit covered for MAYBE 24 hours then throw in the fruiting chamber. As you can see they colonize hella aggressively. Use a thin 50/50 with some lime if you got it, 1/4 of an inch would be sufficient.

Very nice. Not everyday you see uncased pans fruiting - and this nice. What pan cyan strain is it?
