Japan 2011 any IDEA?
    #14573097 - 06/07/11 07:05 AM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Hi!
I would like you to look at the pictures and try to help me identify them.
Location: Japan
Habits: Growing in group on the ground, near pine tree
Touch: feels rigid (probably coz. too dry already)
Spore print: couldn't get much, purple to brown
Color: light beige brown, bluish when starts to dry and becomes dark brown-purple when completely dry.
Thanx

There is a good chance you have Psilocybe argentipes, give them some water and see if they mature to give us a better idea of the macroscopic characteristics, your small image shows specimens that macroscopically look very similar to P. semilanceata but I'm sure it isn't that species due to the location, habit and habitat under what looks like a Pinus species and fruiting in clusters from soil, the colour and form of the stipe is reminiscent of many species belonging in Section Zapotecorum.

Psilocybe argentipes is a Japanese species belonging in Section Zapotecorum and is macroscopically close to P. subcaerulipes which also belongs in that section and resides in Japan.

P. argentipes has spores that are rather small (5) 6.6-7.7 (8.5) by 3.8-4.4 by 3.3-3.8 μm and subellipsoid in face and side view but sometimes slightly inequilateral in side view, the cheilocystidia are variously shaped and often irregularly branched with two to three necks, pleurocystidia are absent, this species often has a pseudorhiza or rooting stipe similar to P. zapotecorum, P. aucklandii, P. moseri and P. graveolens, it is most likely that a few other species in this section will prove to sometimes have a pseudorhiza with further study, P. aucklandii often has a long pseudorhiza but this macroscopic characteristic is not mentioned in Dr Guzmán's description I'm guessing either due to poor collection methods of the type specimens or possibly the collection lacked the pseudorhiza which is not always present, this macroscopic characteristic is not taxonomically significant unless it is always present but it is good to note it's occasional presence!

Maybe you could water these and get back to us with some more revealing images:)

Wow!! This is so cool! I can't say what i think it is because i don't really have a clue. I could say P. subaeruginascens because its really the only Psilocybe i associate with Japan, but it really doesn't look like it at all. Then again, the described Ps. subaeruginascens (not he bay area ones) hasn't been found since it was collected in Java I don't think and it hasn't been found enough to really say we know much about possible morphological variations. I hope this is Ps. subaeruginascens, this find could end some of the descrepencies in the whole west coast ovoid ordeal..

That's what I was thinking. When you look at the macroscopic variation in some species, then you consider the habitat and time of year, I'd say that it's entirely possible.

What excites me is how gregarious they are. Would love to get this species up and running over here.

That is a good guess given the location within Japan, cap shape, inrolled wavy margin, and habitat under pine.
