is spawn medium and casing the same?
    #14571933 - 06/06/11 10:28 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Sorry, this is kind of a noob question and if it's been answered before please direct me there because i couldn't find anything but...

I'm getting awfully close to having everything ready for my first grow, but I was having difficulty trying to clarify whether or not spawn medium and casing are interchangeable. I read some posts where people describe using coir/vermiculite as a medium, and in one of these teks I read, that same mixture is used as casing, yet in most of the other teks I've read, people seem to be using something different for the medium than what they use for the casing. Then I watched this video:

At 47:22, he starts talking about bulk growing with casing, but doesn't mention a medium at all, he just seems to drop the colonized substrate right into the tray.

Of course these are all slightly different teks, but I would love to understand what differences about each tek requires the different methods for it to successfully fruit and why - if anyone can explain that to me i'd be super grateful.

The reason why I ask is I want to use this tek: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/4323984/an/0/page/0
but use the coir/vermiculite mixture described in this tek: http://www.shroomery.org/8432/From-syringe-to-print-using-rye
instead of horse manure

thanks for any help anyone can give me!

i didnt even watch it.

youtube is not a website for information.

its a website for stupid internet videos.

get your information from us.

and you can find the difference in the terms bulk substrate and casing layer quite easily with the search function.

Ok...i will search for you this time...ONLY!!! :P

Stamet's defines spawn as " the aggregation of mycelium" on a carrier material which is usually used to inoculate prepared substrates "

The term "casing" as it is used in the mushroom cultivation is the method by which substrate is covered with a non-nutritive layer such as peat moss, vermiculite, or different mixtures of the previous with various additives to create perfect micro-climate.
Casing is a simple process: You layer and level the substrate to an appropriate container and cover with your casing layer.

A bulk substrate is a substrate of greater volume that is used for mushroom cultivation on a large scale.

Examples of different types of bulk substrates used for cultivation of Ps. cubensis may be straw, dung, or coco coir supplemented with additives such as worm castings.

Bulk substrates are  pasteurized and are  inoculated using spawn made with whole grains such as rye berries or wild bird seed; as opposed to grain or flour based substrates, which are sterilized.

And for the end...n00b proff coir tek : http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=2&Number=11916595&fpart=&PHPSESSID=

You're confused over that video because he didn't know what the fuck he's talking about.  The blatant mistakes have been brought up many times over the last year.

Spawn is normally your grains or brf cakes, etc., that you use to inoculate your bulk substrate.  A bulk substrate is material such as straw, manure, coir, etc.

A casing layer is a non-nutritious material that is placed over the bulk substrate, but is not necessary with cubensis and most other species as well.  There's been a lot of misinformation posted on this board over the years too, where people refer to their 'casing' as if it were a name for 'the tray I grow mushrooms in' but this is incorrect.

Some of the confusion found on the board through the search engine may stem from the fact that coir was originally used as a casing mix - it was alternative to peat moss and mixed with vermiculite in varying ratios.  RogerRabbit (above) suggested that coir could be used as a substrate, and through experimentation, folks found out that coir does have a bit more nutritional value than originally thought.  It is now generally used as a bulk substrate itself rather than a casing layer.

Why is the guy in the video in such a rush?

Banging around jars, ripping off aluminum foil when he checks his cased substrate, and his "scalpel" is a big-ass steak knife or something.

I laughed out loud.
