Why you shouldn't put a humidifier inside a terrarium

I've seen a few people post saying that either they have a humidifier inside their terrarium or are thinking of doing so. My FOAF put his ultrasonic inside his plastic wardrobe closet terrarium and it died after 5 days. He decided to disassemble it to diagnose the problem and upon opening it up it was obvious that condensation inside the electronic guts of the humidifier had caused a short. A fuse was blown and there was major rusting on all exposed metal contacts. Replacing the fuse failed to bring the unit back to life. Either the fan motor is dead and/or another component (transducer possibly) is DOA.

My FOAF strongly advises avoiding the temptation to put a humidifier inside a high humidity envirionment unless you have a fat wallet and don't mind replacing them on a regular basis. It's much more practicle to pipe the humid air into your terrarium with PVC pipe or dryer duct. You also benefit from bringing in fresh air this way.

A ultrasonic mist maker may be the solution to these problems. Since it contains no fan there is nothing to break or rust. At about $25 it is in the same price range as a cool mist humidifyer. Although this does not introduce fresh air, the humidity it produces is second to none.
