Small minds discuss people. Average minds discuss events. Great minds discuss ideas.

Soooo, This discussion is about something "Eleanor Roosevelt" stated? Does she qualify as "People?"

I'd add one more. Super-duper minds think about all three and formulate complete philosophies. Then realize they've just stumbled upon the same thing Socrates and the like did thousands of years ago. They add into their philosophy that we all come to the same conclusions despite our differences and then go out into the world to spread the love. Then they go home and cry because they are a minority of a minority of a minority. Also because the cute thing Sally's cat did has no intrinsic intellectual value further than, "I would like attention now."
Meh, the original was good enough.

The idea presented encompassed three different realms. You chose to give it the meaning "Gossip" Nothing more, nothing less. I just stated what was "Obvious" to me. That's only a "story" I created, much like the "story" YOU created. Nothing wrong with that brother! Don't make it "wrong".

Why is gossip proof on non intelligence? Better back if up if you expect me to buy it.
Eleanor was involved with politicians. Not too smart imo.

We are thrust into a reality that is so strange and broad, you can spend an eternity trying to comprehend it. Those that choose to try are IMO the greatest of the great. Those that choose to preoccupy their brief life with what is in their immediate surroundings, with what is so blatantly obvious, with what has no real implications of the meaning or truth of this reality, are (in my and Eleanor's opinion) weak minded fools.
And while I agree that politicians are usually scum, there are exceptions like the Roosevelts who partook in politics because they saw the greater potential of humanity. Crazy, huh?

If they were that smart they would have put their energy into furthering their own situation instead of being so devoted towards furthering humanity as a whole, which is a fools errand imo.

The quote refers to "small minds," but I don't think that necessarily means stupidity. When we refer to someone as "small-minded," that can mean things like shallow or petty or dogmatic, and not necessarily refer to someone's intelligence.

One can do both as far as thinking about the meaning of life and indulging in a little gossip from time to time.
who partook in politics because they saw the greater potential of humanity.
proof? And don't forget that Hitler saw the greater potential of humanity or thought he did.

Well, to be honest I thought Eleanor Roosevelt was Theadore Roosevelt's wife until a few minutes ago, so never mind. Still, she has some great quotes.
Yes, and he was horrible man for sure, but he still had ideas for a greater world, however fucked up they may have been. Which, IMO, makes him a great man. And who knows, maybe he started out a good man and was corrupted somewhere along the line, like most people in power are

Now you're getting to the meat and potatoes of a GOOD discussion!

Right cause the selfless act is a myth. If it feels good do it but don't fool yourself that you are doing it for anyone but yourself. It's all equal in the big picture. The Tao does not care.

I'd ask for a little wisdom with my intelligence. Not many ever seem to have much of the wisdom and common sense. Emotions rule in those areas. But just shutting up and building a better bomb seems like no problem.

I think everyone gossips (including me). Some people do it out of boredom or hate and some people do it for other reasons. I'm guessing it's because it's a hard thing to avoid in a society based on competition. "Seeing faults" in others can be a "one up" in that area for the observer. IMO the gossip that sucks the most is the one that is assumptive and/or hateful. A hateful gossip is one that is meant to hurt someone. On the other hand an assumptive one is when we believe that something is true, because it seems to fit in with the rest of the "story". Sometimes we don't question ourselves about other possibilities and stick to what we want to be true. Then we spread these "truths" around as if we have proof. That's what I would call small mindedness. A mind state where we are not able to "see" that what we are thinking might not be true. There's a possibility I'm being small minded right now and I doubt I'm going to notice it. I bet someone else will though .
I don't think gossip has a cause and effect relationship with intelligence or wisdom, although I would expect it to happen less with wise people. Giving someone constructive criticism instead of talking behind their back is always a wiser alternative to gossip in my book. It's probably more unlikely to happen though .
