If you were hella dehydrated out in the desert sand, and were dying from lack of water, and then u saw a coyote and quickly shot and killed it with a bow and arrow, would you be able to drink the coyote blood thus making urself not die from dehydration? Would the blood work like water to save you?

Cacti have water inside them.
I don't think blood is the same as water. Even animal blood.

I doubt it, the blood will have high salt content. You're better off squeezing the fluid from it's eyes and maybe drinking it's piss.

Very true, some have fluid in them but it will only dehydrate you more. Especially if it makes you vomit out of both ends.
I would not drink any fluid from an animal. Cook that shit. Eat everything. There is a moisture content in food.
Best rule is never be caught in the desert without more water than you thought you could ever need.

What you need is a "death still" like they use on Arrakis. Then you could extract the pure water from any dead animals, humans included of course. A stillsuit wouldn't hurt either, though once you are dehydrated it wouldn't do much to help except preserving what water is left in your body.

I was suggesting that you could cut the cactus open and drink the water from it. Not eat the friggin cactus.

I know.
Quote:
Surviving on water from a cactus is generally a very bad idea. First of all, the amount of water you are likely to obtain from a cactus is minimal - its inside is tough and fibrous. Indeed, it is possible to obtain some moisture from the inside of a cactus but it is not pure water. Often cactus water is slimy and highly acidic. The survival fact is that drinking cactus juice like this may only lead to further dehydration. http://www.survivaltopics.com/survival/survival-myths/

I remember reading someplace in some survival book long ago that drinking blood with just make you more thirsty. Your body trying to digest all of the protein in the blood will just end up using more water then the water you can actually get from the blood itself.
This information might be outdated. Anyone know if this is true?

Ever tasted blood? It's almost as salty as seawater. And seawater I know for a fact you cannot drink, because of the salt. I would suspect blood is the same.

I just found this, not an expert source
Quote:
* In extreme situations, a dehydrated person can survive by drinking blood. "It's not terribly bad because blood is a high source of protein, so you get energy and fluid from the blood," says Wayne Askew. But it's not optimal because even though blood is 82 percent water, your body still has to use water to digest the proteins in the animal's blood. And animals can carry deadly diseases. So drinking blood should only be a last resort.

To stoned to really search so...
I wonder. Makes sence though that blood would use more than it would give fluid wise. Sounds like a good source of energy. Just worry about diseases. Maybe you could boil it first.

I mean people drink cows blood so I don't see why you couldn't. I am going to assume that the blood is sterile and full of nutrients and vitamins. With knowing this I am unable to tell you of any adverse effects on the human body.

There are African tribes that drink cows blood. I ran into that on my search but I knew that from before. It did say they supplemented it with milk.
I guess I would be less worried drinking blood from an animal in a good habitat. I would not drink the blood from the deer around here and I would not even eat the deer around Jacksonville, Oregon. Better the habitat better the blood. Maybe a harsh environment promotes mostly healthy animals where diseases are less of a problem. Makes sense to me. Not to mention a from genetic and birth to death exposure to it. Dammit maybe that is something else.
