protein question
    #14570229 - 06/06/11 04:22 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

So I lift weights about 2-3 times a week. Sometimes I eat good protein after a workout and sometimes I don't.

Is it true that if you don't eat protein right after a workout that you are wasting the workout?

No, the need for protein is over stated by muscle magazines and protein powder marketing.

If anything, eat more complex carbs after your workout like brown rice and peas because they will refuel your muscles glycogen stores.

It is true, however, that after like an hour of not eating carbs that time for your muscles to repair increases pretty dramatically.

It's not really a waste though.  What is your exercise goal? Build mass? Get stronger? Run longer?

No your not wasting it but it helps a lot to eat protein right after especially if your trying to gain but really I don't think you could possibly get more than a 20-30% boost by drinking protein...everyones different tho.

No.
As long as you get a good protein meal within 2-3 hours of a workout you're good. You get more benefit from a fast acting carb source immediately post workout. Chocolate milk is a good source of fast acting carbs, and has some protein to boot.

oat meal, brown rice, whole grains.

There was a study done with distance bikers and chocolate milk and they recuperated faster than the control water only group, I'll look into it later

This is well documented. I run races and they even offer chocolate milk when the race is over.

I might consider buying some chocolate milk to drink after my DL sessions.

a pint?
I don't actually use choc_M myself, as I don't really like it, I have a bottle of isotonic drink with a bit of whey thrown in.
although sugar is usually to be avoided, immediately post exercise it will replenish muscle glycogen. a lot of "muscle" growth is actually the muscle storing more glycogen, rather than the actual protein muscle fibres getting bigger, which is why, to a certain extent at least, bodybuilders are quite weak in proportion to their muscle size, compared to say an oly lifter.

edit: as for other PWO snacks, sushi springs to mind as a good one. lots of high GI rice and some nice salmon or w/e for some protein. mmmmm.:smirk:

yes and no. Chocolate inhibits calcium intake which is good for your bones...

like prep H was saying carbs. I have met bodybuilders who said honestly it was the massive amounts of carbs they ate.

Besides that the workout isnt wasted. Your just not doing it at 100% best muscle  growth.

yea really you need to state what your doing it for and why. That would help people alot!!!!!!

Of course having something to eat is going to make you recover faster than just water, really dumb study if you ask me.

I say just eat real food.  If you want a protein shake blend raw eggs, yogurt, hemp and chia seeds, banana and berries (my breakfast every day).  Chocolate milk and protein powders are processed crap for the most part.

Go for real healthy food rather than just what makes you put on the most weight.

does it?
it might impair the uptake of the calcium in the milk, but the point of the PWO drink is to get sugars and a little protein.
if your only source of calcium was chocolate milk, or you washed down your calcium supplements with chocolate milk then it might be a problem, but otherwise I don't think it's a big deal, if a deal at all.

lol... calcium comes in milk. how can calcium impair calcium? chocolate can, well im pretty sure might inhibit calcium intake. When you eat brownies or chocolate... you crave milk right?  I think (not positive) that it has to do with craving calcium due to the chocolate. but chocolate milk is milk with calcium so it prob equals it out. So really wouldnt make much of a difference I GUESS.

hmmm, re the chocolate milk, in the US it's probably made with HFCS, which isn't such a great carb choice.
re protein, the glutamine (for example) in a raw egg is identical to the glutamine in a protein shake, and more effectively absorbed. never mind Rocky, raw eggs aren't a good choice of protein.
When I say I use whey powder I mean that, pure whey, no flavourings, no sweeteners, no anything else.
It comes in a bucket like this, and tastes of pretty much nothing.

I definitely do not recommend Mint-Berry-Choc-Vanilla EXPLOSION with added Crea-shred™ and Ingredient X-Pump127G!!!! or the like.

I agree pure whey made from healthy cows is good shit, but most of what people eat is bad shit.

That said, whey is just protein, eggs have lots of essential fats, vitamins, cholesterol, very important for muscle building.

definitely.
I only use whey PWO, as it's easy to get down, and I'm not usually feeling like eating anything immediately PWO.
It's usually an hour or so later, I feel like eating a cow.

Pure whey is the shit and the only kind of powder one should be ingesting IMO. Like Champion and Canna have stated, tastes like nothing but does the job.

I have found that a perfect PWO form of carbs comes in the likes of starches. I found after many years of doing all this stuff that a sweet potato or yam is delicious and restores muscle glycogen quickly.

There are really so many ways you can go about the hole thing though. One way I have actually tried and enjoyed was a high fat/ high protein diet 24 hours after workouts, keeping glycogen very low. This keeps protein synthesis rates high and helps to continue to burn fat. Carbing up after the 24 hour marker is pretty cool too; you feel the tingle of the glycogen being replenished, your veins bulge and your feeling like a million bucks.
