Cool mist for monotubs in tight quarters
    #14569466 - 06/06/11 01:33 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

Hey guys,

Due to my living situation, my grow is restricted to a relatively small crawlspace that I believe I will be able to fit 4 tubs into.  I also live in a fairly dry area, and was thinking that this may be one instance where a cool mist could be useful to provide both humidity and FAE.

While I'm willing to climb into the crawlspace and manually mist/fan a couple times a day, it'd be annoying and I'd rather just set things up conveniently from the beginning.  My main enemy is going to be limited FAE, so having timed, forced airflow into the tubs could do them a lot of good...and I wouldn't have to worry about drying out my substrate.  The door to the area would be open at night, and closed during the day.

Whaddaya think?

small fan running down there & dial in the proper thickness of the polyfil;

I'd be more worried about the cleanliness of that area...or the possibility of rodents getting down in there & having a nice little snack.

You could go for the classic set and forget type monotubs with a fan on 24/7 during the fruiting cycle.

Like Citric's grows for example. His was a closet, but the concept is the same. Let the tubs colonize for about two weeks, then turn on the fan and wait another week.

I've made tubs with a cool mist humidifier attached with garden hose on a timer to go off 4x a day for 15 minute intervals an it worked fine but it's easier and less time consuming to use an oscillating fan in your grow area and you will get the same results.  The monotub itself will provide it's own humidity.

Akira had a cool mist on this one ... hard to argue with his results.

You could build a manifold and handle your 4 tubs ...

I must agree that an occilating fan on a timer would be simple and effective.

Climbing up there to check on thing is going to get old quickly.  I suppose we must do what we must do.

Good luck

Thanks guys, fan it is.  A small fan on a timer was the original plan, but just wanted to consider the benefits of this as well.

I'm hoping the area will be clean enough, I already went to town on it with 3 mil plastic + staple gun + duct tape so it's pretty easily cleanable at least.  It's not like I'm doing inoculations there or anything, and I'm using a pretty basic coir substrate...

yea, you should be fine.

You did tape over the staples holes, right?

I'm sure you'll be fine.

I made my grow room outta 2x4's & 4 mil plastic, just the same, but in a basement, not a crawl space.

One thing that just popped up, you need a way to pull air outta the space, too...not just push it in...

I have a few random holes in my room for just that purpose...

Yeah, thanks for lookin' out Todlow!  Things are pretty well sealed off with tape so I feel good about it.  I am going to put in a hole or two that go to the main room, and cover them with a tapestry or something.

There is a much larger crawlspace in the main house (not my bedroom) that I could use if I really need the FAE, but it would involve telling my roommates I grow.  Might happen later in the summer if I end up with a shitload of colonized spawn, we'll see.  Gonna keep it on the DL for now though.

In an area that small, though, would you run the fan  24/7 or on a timer?  Does it depend on the strength of the fan?

Depends on the strength of the fan & the size of your space.

I just turned up my desktop fan in my room to II (highest setting) because my tubs weren't getting enough FAE.

Dude, your roomies will find out. How do you plan to do grains w/out them knowing? the smell alone is enough to make some aware of what's going on...

I'd level w/ them or just wait until you got your own place.

Prepped my grains in my old house, now all I gotta do is sit and wait to spawn them.  Boiling a little water late at night for Coir/verm/gyp shouldn't be an issue, and I've kinda got a separate side-house I live in.  But the huge crawlspace is in the main house....

I plan to tell them once I reach the point where I need the big room, but figure there's no reason to tell extra people about it at this point.

On a semi-related note....what is the best way to tell whether my monos are getting sufficient FAE or not?  I imagine it will be obvious come time to harvest the first flush, but would like to get the fan settings dialed long before then...

You can tell by the moisture evaporation from the surface of the substrate & the mushrooms themselves...

Gotcha.  I'll keep an eye on how things look moisture-wise after misting.

Also, I've been thinking about what you said about coming clean to the housemates, and I think you're right.  I'm just going to use my small crawlspace for incubation (easier to heat), and fruit everything in the big room.  Good call!

if they say "no" then screw them, tell them you were just doing research & thought about it & move out whenever you can.

You can also get in the habit of taking a whiff of the tub every so often. There is a fresh tub smell and a stale tub smell. If tub smells stale often, then tweak in direction of increased fae. If noticing circular dry spots around the fae ports, tweak in direction of decreased fae.
