i was down at the beach today. i got to thinking. how come all the sand on the beach is the same size? sure there are some big rocks and pebbles etc, but the majority of the sand seems to get to one standard size and stop. why? i sat with a hand full of sand for ages thinking why dont it get eroded to nothing. or at least why are all the grains a similar size?
any thoughts folx?

Well they do vary quite a bit. But the general population of sand being a particular size is just being selected for by nature based on the conditions of that environment, influenced by air and water and sediment composition. It just happens to be the dominant byproduct of those conditions.

because they all traveled the same distance from their source material and the energy on the beach is fairly consistant meaning smaller ones will be swept further away and larger ones will be deposited closer to their source
if you want me to go in depth further i can but thats like a 1/4assed answer

Because your sand was imported and you dont naturally have sandy beaches.

if it gets to small the wind can pick it up easy and away they tiny dust particles go. To big and they sit where they are until they become small enough the water can move them in and out of the shoreline then a truck picks it up and drops it in england so people who eat shitty boiled meat can have a beach.

Maybe because all the smaller ones have infact eroded and you are holding the smallest size possible before its too small.

I think most British beaches are sandy tbh. I've certainly visited more sandy ones than pebble-y ones.
Fucking pebble beaches are shite.

The tides etcetera basically sort the sand automatically. If it's too large or too small it ends up dragged off to some other place, probably underwater. Only a certain size of sand grain is the right size to stay on the shore. That's my understanding anyway.
