Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation

Ok, so my immediate family has brought this possibility to my attention to hopefully "treat" major depression and related Bullshit. Fuck going into my shit here unnecessarily but has anyone here ever even heard of this, or been through this, or even have any inkling of what this procedure can really do? It seems relatively new.
I have read their Wiki and website, but I'm nowhere near sold or, really, as informed as I'd like to be on the idea. Please, can anyone put this into layman's terms, or explain it/ give your viewpoint. This really isn't my specialty...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transcranial_magnetic_stimulation
Here's the wiki
I don't know. I would be happy to ascribe to something that will help to such a promised degree - one procedure to counter mental imbalance for the rest of your life? Too good to be true? Fuck, man.
I am posting this here, as I give this a few days of reflection before I confront my doctor. I am also quite wary of possible side effects. Not that I'm quite sure what they would be...
Thanks if you read,
Thanks much more if you have anything to add... this is about to be the biggest decision I have faced in my young life. So naturally I post it here...
I think I will try and stall this decision till the end of this work-week, at least. It has been fermenting grotesquely since before the last, and has blossomed as you now glimpse. I'm more worried of the impact on the family than my ability to deal with this. But, such moral repositioning can only be subtle and build similarly in time.

Sounds pretty highly endorsed by the medical community for depression not helped by anti-depression meds.Quote:
December 18, 2007 — A large, randomized controlled trial finds that transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is safe and effective for treatment-resistant major depression. Response and remission were better in patients who received 4 to 6 weeks of treatment with active TMS than with sham TMS.

It appears that the only potential serious side effect would be siezures, but as far as I can tell there have been 0 since 1996
Quote:
Is TMS safe?
...In addition, in an international workshop held in 1996, safety guidelines have been established for the parameters of repetitive TMS, which are widely accepted by the scientific community. Since then no cases of seizure have been reported.

Though it is a relatively new technology, it sounds fairly safe to me. I would be hesitant to offer you advice but I would hope that you do not feel pressured to do anything you do not want to do. I have struggled with some amount of depression in my life and I know that it is hard to be optimistic when things are bad, but if you can try to stay active, even if you don't feel like it.
Hope things get better for ya

A friend of mine just got a job in a lab that studies TMS. Basically says that they focus the magnet to a specific spot in your brain, which stops neurons from firing momentarily. He says it is completely safe and I should try it as a guinea pig for their study. I'm not too sure about doing it for no reason, but the adverse affects seem minimal to non-existent for serious conditions like TMS.
-------------------- "A human being is part of the whole, called by us 'Universe'; a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest -- a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and affection for a few persons nearest us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole nature in its beauty. Nobody is able to achieve this completely but striving for such achievement is, in itself, a part of the liberation and a foundation for inner security." Albert Einstein

Good vibes brother, I don't have much to add but I'm wishing you the best. I'm sure whatever you decide will be the right decision.
