Tampa, Florida -- A chemical found in "bath salts" -- not viral meningitis -- killed a man, according to the Hillsborough County Medical Examiner.
23-year-old Jairious McGhee is the first person in Florida known to have died as a result of taking synthetic drug methylone, which is sold as bath salts.
This isn't the kind of bath salt you'd want to bathe in though. While it's typically labeled as "Not for Human Consumption," it's the only reason people buy the product which is actually a dangerous psychoactive stimulant.
Governor Rick Scott signed a bill on Tuesday banning the products following an emergency ban put in place by Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi in January.
Dr. Julie Pearson, chief forensic toxicologist with the Hillsborough County Medical Examiner's Office tells 10 News it took her a lot of time to determine what chemical the otherwise healthy young man had in his system.
"It looked like I had a match and I got suspicious right away," she said of the peak she noticed on his charts. It was a drug she had only recently read about in her professional journals.
In order to compare, she had to special order a methylone standard with her DEA license so she could confirm her suspicions. Methlyone is one of five chemicals found in bath salts now banned in Florida. It's found in one brand marketed as XOXO.
Dr. Pearson believes McGhee may have taken the bath salts orally, although she cannot say for sure. She does not even know how much he took or how often.
"It might have been his first time," she said.
He suffered from the common side effects of methylone including high fever and erratic behavior.
"Essentially your body temperature gets so high and your body can't handle that high temperature, your muscle start breaking down and when that happens, your organs start failing," explained Dr. Pearson.
"It's such a new drug, we don't know how much they need to take to produce those side effects," she added.
It all started on April 2nd, when Tampa Police Department say a motorist reported seeing a man banging on cars and acting crazy in the area of Dale Mabry and Kennedy Blvd.
When the officer approached McGhee, he says the young man was behaving erratically, had urinated on himself, had blood shot eyes, dry lips and appeared wide eyed and incoherent.
The officer says McGhee lunged at him when he asked if he was OK. Although a taser was deployed, it has been determined the taser prongs never hit McGhee, according to the Medical Examiner.
He was taken to Tampa General Hospital where another struggle occurred, according to police. This was around 5:30 p.m. on April 2nd.
By 9:45 p.m. the next day, McGhee was dead.
At first, doctors thought he may have had a viral meningitis infection because of his symptoms and even suggested Tampa Police have their officers treated as a precaution. TPD says their officers were given an antibiotic just in case.
But, Dr. Pearson's findings conclude it was methylone, not meningitis that killed the healthy young man.
The Florida Poison Information Center in Tampa tells 10 News they've received 119 calls regarding reactions to bath salts which include paranoia, seizures and aggression.
Dr. Cynthia Lewis-Younger, medical director of Tampa's center says she wasn't surprised to learn about the death being linked to bath salt usage.
"I was expecting it. We've been waiting for the deaths to start happening," she said.
She says Pinellas County has had the most reports with eight cases of someone having a bad reaction to bath salts. There have been five cases in Hillsborough, including McGhee, and 4 in Pasco County.
Incidents are still very underreported, she said.
Dr. Lewis-Younger says she wants to reach out to the families of the people who abuse the so-called bath salts, "It's the family members who can make a difference."
Common symptoms include rapid heart rates, seizures, bizarre acts and violent behaviors, high fever and high blood pressure.
While the drug is illegal in Florida, it can still easily be purchased in other states or on line.
"There's more work that needs to be done," said Jennifer Davis, spokeswoman for Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, "The Attorney General has reached out to other surrounding states to warn them about this compound."
A federal bill to ban the chemicals in the bath salts nationwide was filed recently.
TPD says it's possible the person who sold McGhee the bath salts could be prosecuted since methylone is banned in Florida under the previous emergency ban.
McGhee worked at the University of Tampa in the cafeteria according to TPD. According to his Facebook page, he aspired to be a chef in Miami. A cousin remembered him as a man with a gentle nature and carefree spirit.

must have been a ton or really was sick and it did not go well with drug. People fall of a horse and die because they are drunk or sick and lightheaded but where is the "ban horses" bill?

These deaths are kind of making me worried about MXE. Think the people are doing stupid amounts, or that RC's have some legit dangers?

Legit dangers, IMO.
Happens with mainstream big pharma drugs too. Vioxx was withdrawn because of about a dozen deaths. Thalidomide is another example.

I find it really hard to believe this was Methylone (bk-MDMA). I've done large amounts of it and never had anything close to the symptoms described.
Quote:
a motorist reported seeing a man banging on cars and acting crazy in the area of Dale Mabry and Kennedy Blvd.
When the officer approached McGhee, he says the young man was behaving erratically, had urinated on himself, had blood shot eyes, dry lips and appeared wide eyed and incoherent.
Sounds more like MDPV or Mephedrone... I guess it could affect people differently though.
