The Red Book
    #14566043 - 06/05/11 07:21 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

I can't believe I'm gonna do this, but I'm about to spend a hundred dollars on a book. It's called The Red Book, and is by Carl Jung. It's a sixteen year diary of hallucinations he self induced to get to the core of the human psyche. It looks to be.. A very unique and rewarding read. His writings are some of the most inspirational I've read, so that plus the content the book contains is justifying this for me.

If anyone has read this, how good actually is it?

I haven't read it but I certainly would like to.  He was a strange guy.

I think it would be a much more fruitful endeavor to create your own Red Book. You can only go so far with someone else's symbols.

I already am. I document all my mystical experiences and dreams in two leather bound books. However, reading someones sixteen year compilation of their red book would be worth it to me.

Good stuff. I also record my dreams and mystical experiences. In fact I'd say its one of the best things I started doing as far as a personal spirituality goes. Any success connecting with your personal Philemon?

I agree strongly about it being one of the best things you can do to get in touch with yourself and your subconscious. Well, I believe I have contacted a higher aspect of myself. It seems to not really be able to leave me now that I have contacted it. It's nice to have it though. I think it has something to do with focusing on the non-physical more rather than the physical.

I too record dreams and mystical experiences myself. It is always interesting to write things down and go back and read them; I seem to be able to interpret them a little better after a little while. I have found that by writing things down and pondering them I to have that connection with my higher self that seems to stick around.

The hardback version is really nice. I love how he turned his journal into an "illuminated manuscript". Especially all the pictures.

I am familiar with the Red Book, but CGJ wrote it in Latin with Illuminations - very medieval flavor. I believe there are parts in German. I am not sure if it has been translated into English, and if it hasn't, then, being monolingual, it's not worth the price for me. I enjoy the pen-and-ink work that I have seen of the red Book, but the idea is (after 8 years of Jungian analysis) that you must make your own journal. Those representations of Philemon, Jung's projected 'mana personality' are HIS versions of the same archetypes that populate your psyche and mine.

If you don't read Latin or Swiss-German, see if it's translated. I am not very good at drawing (some of my drawings are in the Gallery here), but whatever one's skill level or style, it's more important to create your own. Otherwise, one joins the "Jung Cult" as author Richard Noll put it, one aggrandizes Jung instead of following his therapeutic advice. Draw your dream images and write descriptions, commentaries and don't forget to put down the attending emotions. Read Jungian analyst Barbara Hannah's work Encounters with the Soul: Active Imagination,  and learn a 20th century school of 'magick' wherein you contact your dream creatures, and dialogue with them, receiving THEIR responses! Don't join the Jung Cult. That's what most so-called Christians do with Jesus, instead of being Christ-like, they put Jesus on a pedestal (a cross, actually). Just my 2cents.

I know, Cosmo sort of already brought up "making your own redbook would be a much more fruitful endeavor" and my answer to that was that I already was. Actually before I even knew Jung had wrote the red book. There is some english translations also. But I understand what your saying, and I agree with it completely. I just want to read his sixteen year journey through the psyche, and learn about his experiences and what he has to say about them.

I'm just going to chime in and say it seems you're pretty attached to the idea of attaining this book. For whatever reason you do not seem to be looking at yourself as the beholder of all answers. During ones own spiritual growth, the Spirit provides one with all necessities of further growing. This may be most commonly attained in meditation, dreams or lucid projections of the consciousness but nonetheless, the Spirit provides.

When one skips over the 'Spirits recommendation' of stepping stones, and goes to other books or tactics, one may seem to be getting farther ahead but a piece of the foundation will be left incomplete.

Reading books on other peoples experience or communicating with others is a great way to remember truth. I would just say feel out where you are currently in your growth and development. Sometimes the ego uses very brilliant tactics to completely distract us. It will look to others for something the Spirit is ready to provide.

Good luck on your endeavor, brother.

Maybe I should show you one of my own journals.  I gave it a name like Jung's book Memories, Dreams, Reflections. I named mine Dreams, Visions and Theophanies. I began it on Halloween 1989, and there are still a few pages left. Its a couple of inches thick. Meanwhile, I began a new book on 08/08/08. The first one turned into more synchronicities and mushroom cultivations than either dreams or visions. It shows a development away from my primary Jungian orientation (especially after I was rejected from analytical training - essentially because I use psychedelics). Today, Grof's work embodies both Freud and Jung, but also Otto Rank, and transpersonal theorists. Then, there is my own model which I wrote as a doctoral dissertation. It follows the ascending and descending paths outlived in Tibetan Buddhist Yoga, moving from deterministic motivations, and morphing, through Jung, to existential theorists. The higher one goes, the less determined and freer one's consciousness becomes. Sorry for the digression.

OP, I got this book last Christmas and haven't read it yet. (I have huge respect for Jung and I don't want to start reading his most intimate work just willy-nilly, I've been trying to wait for the right time and really commit myself to it. I've looked through many of the illustrations and it looks like a fucking trip and a half.)

Howabout we both agree to read it, and compare notes?

Also, if anyone wants a cheaper/easier to find Jung book which is still very intimate and enlightening, I cannot recommend his autobiography "Memories, Dreams, Reflections" too highly. Your library will almost certainly be able to get it for you. It is definitely worth reading, no ifs ands or buts.

It's been 3 years, true enough. I can only write during extended periods, and I don't work from this Saturday to the 2nd week in August, so I'm gonna continue. I've got about 120 pages so I'm not gonna abandon it. Then, I need to get published. I need to find out whether I have to contact dozens of publishers in order to get permission to use quotations. An acquaintance of mine just got published. Today he announced on Facebook that it's on Amazon's Kindle. First I have to finish, but thanks for the reminder!

--------------------
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us all. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.

I love how it's obvious we all sort of create our own forum out of our mood and contrasts of personal philosophy, yet Icelander continues to think there's some objectivity going on around here even after 20-something ignores.

Ice cold bitterness!
