ID Request
    #14564046 - 06/05/11 10:36 AM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Habitat: Michigan hardwood forest. Growing from log.

Cap: has a slight umbo.

At first I thought Pluteus, but the gills are attached.
Now I'm thinking either Entoloma (but the gills don't seem too pinkish and it's growing from wood), or Tricholoma (which I've never seen before).

What do you say?

I looked that up on mushroomexpert (my guidebooks don't have Megacollybia), and Clitocybula lacerata also caught my eye, which is similar but features cross veins on the gills, is 2-6 cm, and doesn't have white chords on the stem.

Here's a closer look at the gills, where I think there's cross veins.

I think Megacollybia rodmani looks like a better match (mainly due to the size).

the ragged gill edges are the give-away. I recognized it as soon as I saw it, they are out now. In older books it is called tricholomopsis plataphylla

my best guess would be some kind of boletus species. That cap is fucking crazy looking, it reminds me of a crab claw.

Those are manky old boletes, maybe Xerocomus chrysenteron.  They are not active, a lot of boletes bruise blue.  Please stop posting your finds in other people's threads.

Actually I helped you out.  The complaint I added is a pretty important tip that applies on all forums on the net, and to answer your second post like that without mentioning it would be weird.  Since you're a dick about it by all means go and buy a field guide.
