ALBANY, N.Y. (WIVB) - (RELEASE) U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer called on the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Department of Justice to launch an immediate crackdown on the underground website “Silk Road” that allows users to buy and sell illegal drugs and have them delivered directly to buyers’ homes.
The website, which is only accessible through a secret network that hides users’ identities, allows users to purchase illegal drugs easily and conveniently from other dealers and users throughout the country and around the world.
Drugs ranging from heroin to ecstasy, marijuana, and cocaine can be found on the site.
Schumer and West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin today, in letters to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and Department of Justice (DOJ), called on the agencies to immediately shutdown the website.
Silk Road, launched in February 2011, uses layers of secrecy at all levels of the site to avoid detection from authorities: from limiting access to certain users, to hiding the identities of the buyers and sellers, to disguising shipments in the mail, and even using a form of untraceable currency to disguise payments.
Visitors to the website can purchase an array of illegal drugs including cocaine, heroin, marijuana, methamphetamines and prescription narcotics, in various quantities.
Users post the product and the quantity they are selling and buyers can then do comparison shopping.
In addition to drugs, visitors to the site can purchase illegal firearms. The website even allows user to rate the level of service they receive from drug dealers.
Following reports by the website Gawker and other media outlets last week, Schumer’s office reached out to the Drug Enforcement Agency late last week, urging them to investigate. The DEA confirmed that they are aware of the site.
In a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder and Drug Enforcement Agency Administrator Michele M. Leonhart, Schumer and Manchin urged the agencies to move immediately and shut down the site.

They want to shut down a peer to peer network possibly hosted amongst 1000s of people. HAH. HAH. HAH.
If they only understood how this works.

I'm still a little puzzled on how the Silk Road website operated exactly. It shouldn't be difficult for the DEA to apprehend the owner of the website, right?
very interesting article.

Sure they could apprehend the website owner, then the owner(s), i can't think of what the charge would be. But they could probably get it dismissed.
The owner could relinquish control over the website and transfer it to another peer over heavy pgp encryption on tor. Wash his hands of the deal if the court hearings get too messy.
Since the website is probably hosted with several different peers already within the tor network. Nothing can really be done. Just transfer to a peer in cuba, DEA has nothing. Better yet host the website in a cloud of peers. Nothing can be done.
Best case scenario for the DEA and that Virginia faggot: All site admins are apprehended, the site lives on only moderated by user ratings. The battle failed and the war is lost.

If they succeed at shutting it down, so what? The ball is rolling. There will be more sites to take its place.

I'm almost positive The Silk Road will be the weapon the government uses to finally get the "net neutrality" laws into action. They can't stand being outsmarted.. especially in such a public "We'll do whatever the fuck we want" kind of way.

little off topic but this reminds me about what I was thinking about yesterday. when the government starts (and they already have started) to make their move in regulating the internet they will fail because of all the hackers and shit. there will be some cyberwarfare goin down.

I´m not sure if they can shut it down, but I´m sure they can up their ante and set up a bunch of stings. Not hard. They just become ´sellers´ and pay visits to the addresses of the people who order drugs. That´s what I´d be most worries about. I guess if you´re paranoid you´d send it to a friend or relatives house though and pick it up at their house.... nothing can really be proven.

Conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance.

Research conspiracy laws. The charges are almost impossible to defend against in court - the government almost always wins and the sentences are extremely harsh.
The owner of the silk road could get a conspiracy count for each transaction on the site, perhaps getting thousands of years in prison.

No way can they shut down that shit. They'll just move it somewhere else like the Pirate Bay. Fuck you Schumer!
Not that I'd use that site but still do these senators and people know nothing about the internet?

Silk Road is about the equivalent to the dopehouse down the road now. Very easy to find if you take a second to look for it. There are much better sites with better prices and security out there for sure, not that I'd know or anything

I've looked around a bit for some things like this. Really, the only reliable thing I have is a source through hushmail. I can get some good stuff at good prices that way..But it still would be nice to have a couple of different ones to choose from.

Silk Road said..
"As many of you know, U.S. Senators are aware of the site and aiming to take it down:
"This audacious website should be shut down immediately," Manchin said.
Here's a link: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/06/05/senators-internet-narcotics-_n_871466.html
The die have been cast and now we will see how they land. We will be diverting even more effort into countering their attacks and making the site as resilient as possible, which means we may not be as responsive to messages for a while.
I'm sure this news will scare some off, but should we win the fight, a new era will be born. Even if we lose, the genie is out of the bottle and they are fighting a losing War already.
