Special report: If Monterrey falls, Mexico falls

http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/06/01/us-mexico-drugs-monterrey-idUSTRE7502VG20110601
the article is too long to post here, but it makes some interesting points near the end.
i think its interesting to note the role they place on education in gang recruiting. the way they describe the role of young people in the drug war is a wake up call for me. i find it all too easy to imagine a similar trend taking root here in the US. everyone knows young people have been hit hardest by the recession, i can only imagine the effect of the economic depression on poor students from inner city school districts.
it makes me wonder if perhaps the easiest solution would be to just invest in the young. maybe instead of reforming the police or other similar useless 'public services' it would be smarter to encourage these private companies and govt. officials to invest in schooling, i mean after all, a young person with no skills finds it hardest to make a decent living.
i dont just mean buying more books or fancier facilities, but rather i mean figuring out how to offer a truly rewarding education that is driven by individual student interests instead of passing tests or whatever else they practice there.

the cartels are huge when they parade through town litterally with amercian made trucks and weapons for like 10 minutes straight at least
I dont understand i guess there's more money to be made in murder with those weapons they used to use to protect themselves

I've never been to Monterrey, but the last time I went to Mexico was when I was 15. I used to go to Progresso and Reynosa all the time. Until like one day 15 innocent people were beheaded in a bar in Reynosa in 07. Lots of people have gone missing, even from this side of the border in Mexico. The cartel even shot someones son like 5 houses down in my friends neighborhood. Some sad stuff.

I am not looking forward to escalation on our side of the border. Though I think it will happen fairly soon. A couple of weeks ago there was a lengthy news segment about drug violence related to the activity of mexican cartels in new york city. I was kinda surprised to find out their reach extended even out here, and I think NYC is a perfect recruiting ground for the hitmen described in the article.

They want you to be scared so congress can pass more bills to invade more of your privacy. These guys aren't going to kill innocent people in America and if so not many. They are only after people that rob them and still their drugs. Mexican cartels are in every corner of our country. What happened to people taking care of themselves and leaving the government out of everything. The government wants you to be scared so they can label all drug cartel members and dealers as terrorist so they can have more excuses to snatch your freedom and civil liberties from you. Wake up and don't buy in to all the lies that the media portrays for big brother. Ron Paul 2012

i dont think it will escalate because of the government, but i mean the same reasons people join these gangs out in mexico are rampant in nyc. i cant speak about other places. but in nyc there is high unemployment among youth, horrible education in poor areas. it took me 10 months to find a job and i have a great resume. and at that it was only bc an old boss that i keep in touch with felt distressed that i was unemployed for so long and pulled some strings to make a position for me.
i work at a school now, all of these kids want money without working for it. so its not too unimaginable that they could be lured into gang violence with the idea of dropping out of school and working for cartels.
also violence has been escalating in general in the city, people are getting bold. just this year around four cops have been killed in my neighborhood alone. not that i am complaining or feeling scared or sorry for these cops. but i mean symbolically they are losing their status as authority figures.
i myself felt like finally people are taking back the streets, im just saying its not far fetched to imagine such a drug fueled escalation. and actually no english media is covering any cartel news to my own dismay, i only happened to see this report on a spanish network while channel surfing randomly one day.
in fact ive found that the two spanish networks that broadcast on the free channels are the only networks to even mention the crisis in latin america. a fact which im not surprised by as their base of viewers more often than not have family in the affected areas. and its not a matter of spreading fear but rather a matter of keeping people who already know about the situation (bc they probably talk to their relatives there) stay informed about the state their countries.

lol well at least the airheads dont go out of their way to make me feel inhuman. idk i cant help it, its part of the neighborhood culture. i mean im a girl and ive been beaten by a mob of cops and arrested seven times and im not even the type of person theyre trained to profile. i cant even imagine how the men in my neighborhood feel when i think about how much worse they are treated.
